The buzz around Netflix's 2026 mystery thriller His & Hers, adapted from Alice Feeney's 2020 eponymous novel, sparked curiosity among viewers. But for parents, it raises an important question: how appropriate is it for younger audiences? While the series presents itself as a modern relationship drama combined with a twisted murder investigation, its themes go far beyond lighthearted storytelling. Packed with emotionally intense conflicts, mature conversations and layered character dynamics, the series explores the complexities of adult relationships in a way that may not be suitable for children or even teens.

Helmed by renowned stars Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal, who play an estranged couple caught in the middle of a harrowing murder investigation, His & Hers is an exciting watch but not suitable for children. The series is rated TV-MA in the USA and 18+ in many countries like Turkey, the UK, Canada, Singapore, Ireland and Brazil, making it unfit for children.

Here is a complete His & Hers parents' guide.

His & Hers follows Anna, a former news anchor in Atlanta, who is struggling to rebuild her career after a harrowing tragedy that led to her separation from her husband Jack, a detective at Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office in Dahlonega, Georgia. When Anna overhears a shocking murder case of a young woman in Dahlonega, the town she grew up in, she thinks it is the perfect opportunity to claim back her declining career.

However, Anna's return to her hometown brings back painful memories and brings her face-to-face with her estranged husband, the detective on the case. As Jack becomes deeply suspicious about Anna's motives and involvement with the murder case, many clues surface that link him to the victim, suggesting there is more to him than meets the eye. His & Hers follows an intense murder investigation that explores mature themes of infidelity, marital problems, teen friendship and the limits one would go to protect their loved ones.

His & Hers parents' guide: Factors to consider before letting your kids stream this title

If the Netflix mystery thriller's TV-MA rating is not convincing enough, here are some factors that make this title unsuitable for kids and even young teens:

S*x and n*dity: Netflix's 2026 title contains many instances of implied s*xual activity and female n*dity, which takes center stage in many scenes. The central investigator is s*xually involved with the victim before her death, blurring the lines between his professional and personal life. Additionally, the latter half of the story focuses on a group of teenage women's trip gone wrong, where one of the teens arranges for her peers to be r*ped by male adults, which is certainly unsuitable for children.

Violence: This is one of the defining factors that make His & Hers unsuitable for a young audience. As a show centred around a murder investigation, there are many instances of violence and disturbing imagery. The series opens with the brutal murder of a young woman, who is found dead on the windscreen of a car. Later, the show features a stretched sequence with the woman's body displayed on the autopsy table with 40 stab wounds on her chest. You can also expect violent acts like nails being cut, teeth being broken and stabbing.

Profanity and Crude language: His & Hers is peppered with strong language like F*ck and sh*t. Since Jack Hopper is a complicated character, positioned both as a detective searching for the killer and as a potentially guilty person trying to hide his relationship with the victim, he uses many F-words (during intense scenes) across the show.

While the Netflix title is positioned as a layered & well-executed mystery thriller for adults, it should not be made available to children. Parents trying to make informed viewing decisions and who try to understand a show’s deeper themes and content warnings should think twice before letting their kids watch the series.
