Episode 3 of House of the Dragon Season 3 was released this Sunday on HBO Max. The first two episodes of the show's season 3 introduced major changes to fan-favourite scenes from George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood. However, the third episode did not clearly reveal how it reshaped The Battle of Tumbleton. The battle was not shown directly on screen. However, it took place much earlier in the HBO version than in the source material.
Tumbleton is first mentioned through Hugh Hammer, who explains that his wife has left, and his search in the city only brought the news of her migration to live with her brother there. The town seems like a safe refuge from the unrest in King's Landing, yet the episode's closing moments reveal that the situation shifts in a sudden and dramatic way.

Changes in House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 3

The battle was shown as a raid in House of the Dragon. In Martin's book, the event took place later after the death of Ser Criston Cole. However, the incident hadn't yet happened in the series.
According to the book, the Northern Winter Wolves and their riverlord allies stayed at Tumbleton after winning earlier fights against Team Green. Specifically, they wiped out the forces from the Westerlands and the Crownlands. Out of the book's previous fights, only 'The Battle of Burning Mill' and 'The Fishfeed' have been shown in House of the Dragon.
Ormund Hightower's big Green army attacked the wolves and their riverlords. Ormund's defeat to Daemon was never mentioned in the book. In episode 3, Ormund kneels in surrender before Daemon, who arrives without soldiers. He does not need an army because he has a dragon, and Hugh on his right and Ulf on his left also bring theirs. Daemon promises to spare their lives if they withdraw and hand back young Daeron.
Rhaenyra's soldiers fought with strength and were almost winning until Daeron Targaryen entered the battle riding his dragon Tessarion and burnt them from the sky.
Major Tumbleton changes in House of the Dragon Season 3

On the show, Daeron's first real fight came when he allowed a double to stand in his place at King's Landing. However, the book states that he joined the fight at the Honeywine, where his arrival with his dragon turned what looked like defeat into a victory for the Greens. That entire event was removed from the show.
At Tumbleton, Daeron's presence alone did not secure success. The battle shifted for reasons that cannot be revealed here because the outcome of Tumbleton carries major spoilers. The show still chose to keep one key detail the same.
