House of the Dragon Season 3's latest twist seals the fate of a major character

House of the Dragon Season 3 gave viewers a penultimate episode full of surprising twists. Some of these twists foreshadow the fates of characters in the finale, while some foreshadow the events of next Season.

While the series has incorporated several changes from Martin's books, the latest dragon twist only confirmed that a major character's fate might be the same in the series as in the book. With Sunfyre's return in Episode 7 of House of the Dragon Season 3, the show might have revealed that Rhaenyra's death will be caused by Aegon and Sunfyre, as written in Martin's Fire & Blood.

House of the Dragon Season 3: Sunfyre's return in Episode 7 sealed Rhaenyra's fate

When we saw Sunfyre earlier in the Season, the dragon was shown to be fatally injured, so most people, even Baela, thought it did not survive. However, Aegon later revealed that Sunfyre was not dead yet. His belief turned out to be true when the dragon came to his rescue in Episode 7 of House of the Dragon Season 3.

In George R. R. Martin's book, Fire & Blood, Sunfyre was not declared dead. The dragon was injured and being taken care of by Ser Criston Cole's men. However, the HBO spin-off slightly strayed away from the book when it was revealed that the dragon had died. But the latest episode brought Sunfyre back and reunited the dragon with Aegon, aligning with the book story.

While it did not clarify how Sunfyre survived, this new development will bring more danger to Rhaenyra in the future, as in the book version, Sunfyre will burn and devour her on Aegon's orders.

In Episode 7 of House of the Dragon Season 3, when Rhaenyra's men encountered Aegon and Tyland Lanister, Sunfyre came to his rider's rescue and burned the enemies down. This new development confirmed that Aegon is still Rhaenyra's number one enemy, but he does not yet have a place to hide. He cannot return to King's Landing and face Rhaenyra or go somewhere else, as not just the Queen but his own brother, Aemond, tried to kill him once.

This might leave the usurper with only one option: hide in Dragonstone, as he discussed with Larys earlier. According to the book, Dragonstone is the place where Aegon will kill Rhaenyra. While the show might change some things up, Sunfyre's return strongly suggests that Rhaenyra's end is near and it does involve Aegon and his dragon.

Apart from the dragon twist in the latest episode, it was also revealed that Ulf the White has already changed sides and joined the Greens, just like he did in Martin's book. Ormund Hightower even promised to make him the Lord of the Tides and take charge of Driftmark, since Corlys Valeryon was in his captivity.

With only one episode left, the Game of Thrones spin-off is ready to highlight another deadly battle in Tumbleton. Furthermore, another betrayal that awaits Rhaenyra would be Hugh Hammer. While the series has not confirmed whether Hugh will switch sides as he did in Martin's version of the story, the Season 3 finale will confirm if the HBO series will follow the book's version.
