House of the Dragon showrunner breaks down Vhagar's Season 3 absence

House of the Dragon Season 3 wrapped up with a brutal and nerve-wracking finale. Titled The Treasons at Tumbleton, Daemon alongwith Roderick Dustin and his Winter Wolves, and Oscar Tully and his army join the battle.

Rhaenyra's forces arrive at Tumbleton to kill Lord Ormund Hightower and take control of the town. Elsewhere, Rhaenyra is informed that Aegon is alive and so is his dragon Sunfrye. She rushes to the Grand Sept to force the High Septon to legitimize her position. When he denies, she orders Alyn Hull to kill him. She then gives a speech about how she is the true heir of Viserys. Unfortunately, the season ends on a tragic note with Helaena killing herself.

However, Vhagar's absence was felt throughout the finale. The oldest and the strongest dragon in Westeros, Vhagar's whereabouts are still a mystery. Vhagar was last seen with Aemond in Harrenhal. When Aemond was badly injured, he ended up recovering in Harrenhal under Alys River's care, while Vhagar apparently left. So did Vhagar actually abandon Aemond or not?

To know what happens next, viewers have to wait for the next season. However, showrunner and co-creator Ryan Condal has some answers about Vhagar's absence, revealing the ifs and whys of the story are yet to be explored.

Ryan Condal on Vhagar's absence in House of the Dragon Season 3

Since Vhagar went missing, viewers have come up with several theories. Some viewers believe that Vhagar has abandoned Aemond, while others say he is in hiding. However, the most popular theory says that Alys did something to keep Vhagar away from Aemond. Speaking to Collider, Condal said,

"I doubt Alys has much power over the world of dragon magic, but I would guess that Vhagar has been around for a long time and hasn't survived without being a canny old lady."

Condal further added that Vhagar is all-powerful and the idea that everyone is searching for Vhagar to find Aemond without realising that they were not together was quite fun. The showrunner is excited for what's next for the upcoming season, with Aegon returning with Sunfyre.

In House of the Dragon Season 3 finale, we see Aemond recovering from the poison he drank that was given by Alicent. Alys Rivers saved his life, and when he asks why she cares about him, she reveals that she was married to King Harren Hoare more than a century ago.

She further reveals that Aegon the Conqueror had burnt Harrenhal with his Dragon. Her children suffered the dragonflame burns, and so she turned to black magic to keep them alive. However, it failed, and the curse of the magic affected her, making her immortal and stuck at the castle in Harrenhal.

Aegon arrives at Harrenhal with his dragon Sunfyre, leaving Aemond astonished, who thought he was long dead. Aegon raises his sword and threatens to kill Aemond, but Aemond remains calm.

This ultimately strips Aegon's desire for revenge. When Aegon asks who Alys is, Aemond replies that she is betrothed to him. Aegon declares that once he kills Rhaenyra and takes back the throne, he will think about sparing his brother or not.

According to Variety, the finale episode reached 21 million views within three days of its premiere. House of the Dragon is available to stream on HBO Max.
