House of the Dragon has been preparing for the full-blown chaos of the Dance of the Dragons for two full seasons. And now, with the showrunner, Ryan Condal, announcing that Season 3 will finally do its job and the much-anticipated Battle of the Gullet will be the highlight of the season, it looks like fans cannot wait to see what's in store.

The Battle of the Gullet, from the novel Fire & Blood, is already one of the most memorable and awaited battles of the Targaryen Civil War. House of the Dragon Season 3 will do something different from what's been done before in the franchise, as Condal announced before fans in a panel discussion at the SXSW London event.

HBO has pushed the battle to an extreme scale, with big special effects, intricate stunts, and massive sets. So far, it's up to the audience to determine whether or not it will meet the bar, but House of the Dragon Season 3 is definitely trying to make the Gullet an event the GOT universe will forever remember.

The long-awaited battle in House of the Dragon Season 3

The Battle of the Gullet is no fluke. It's the reward for years of character development, political maneuvering, and rising tensions. Dragons are the show's centerpiece, but House of the Dragon has always focused on the human side of power, and how all conflict has real emotions behind.

It is this battle that is so important. The war has now come to a stage where diplomacy has proven unsuccessful, and the repercussions are likely to be dire. The scene, which showrunner Ryan Condal said was a "long, long time coming," has taken many years to develop, with lots of planning and technical work out of sight.

More than just a spectacle, the Battle of the Gullet in House of the Dragon Season 3 is poised to be a major turning point in the story. It could be the dragons who reign supreme in this action, but the effects on those caught up in the battle could be the biggest hit on viewers.

Bigger than a television episode

Fantasy television has become increasingly adventurous, but the Battle of the Gullet really does rise to the level of the imagination. In House of the Dragon Season 3, it is said that the crew constructed massive ships, utilized multiple water tanks, made use of elaborate stunt work, and relied heavily on practical effects instead of CGI. Ryan Condal claimed at the SXSW London panel,

“This sequence, I will confidently say, is unlike anything ever been done on television before.”

He also stated,

“All of the pot that was set to boil at the end of Season 2 very much picks up in Season 3, and you have these divided factions on either side, but there’s now divisions within the divisions, and those things will continue to fracture, and we’ll continue to see self-interested people do awful things in the name of pride and power and ego and self and family.”

The method increases immersion and realism, and adds real-world weight to the battle that can be felt on screen. The producers also make use of a pyrotechnic stunt, in which many performers catch fire in one scene, something that has never been done before. According to showrunner Ryan Condal, the Battle of the Gullet will be so different from anything television has ever seen, not only because of the dragons, but because of the magnitude and ambition of the filmmaking itself, which would be more akin to that of a major blockbuster movie.
