Javier Bardem's ability to switch between quiet restraint and explosive menace is once again on full display in Apple TV's Cape Fear, where the actor delivers one of his most brutal and emotionally charged performances. The Spanish actor is no stranger to playing some of cinema's most intimidating and emotionally layered villains, having portrayed the chilling Anton Chigurh in No Country for Old Men and the vengeful Raoul Silva in Skyfall.

Javier Bardem once again proved that he is a master at playing cunning villains, with his portrayal of Max Cady, the sociopathic ex-convict in Cape Fear, adapted from John D. MacDonald's thriller novel The Executioners.

Apple TV's latest summer hit wrapped its ten-episode run with an action-packed & high-stakes finale, where Max Cady unleashed his demented sense of justice on the Bowdens, making them hostages in their own home.

However, despite the ferocity audiences witnessed on screen, the atmosphere behind the cameras was markedly different. In a recent interview with Variety at the series' finale screening in New York, actress Lily Collias (who plays Anna's daughter Natalie) recalled filming a particularly intense scene with Bardem and how he apologized to her in advance, before unleashing Max's 'justice' on Natalie and the Bowdens on-screen.

Apple TV's adaptation leaned into the psychological aspects of John D. MacDonald's thriller novel, banking on Javier Bardem's impressive performance as the series big bad. While MacDonald's novel is known and beloved for its cat-and-mouse chase and intense action sequences, Apple TV's Cape Fear heightened that tension by giving Max Cady an inexplicable charm, which not only confused Anna and Tom but also lured their children, Zack and Natalie.

What began as a revenge plot against Tom and Anna transformed into a war against the Bowden family once Max started targeting their children. While Max employed Nevaeh to seduce Zack, who was already fascinated with his unborn child Adam, he used his past with Anna to confuse Natalie about her parentage, manipulating her to believe that she is his daughter.

The cat-and-mouse chase came to a head when Max took the Bowden family hostage in the Cape Fear finale, which resulted in a showdown that concluded the episode on a satisfying note.

However, before that, stars Lily Collias and Javier Bardem had the mammoth task of filming the intense scene where Max grabbed Natalie by the hair and captured her using zip ties, rendering her helpless and unable to help her parents and brother.

In contrast to Max Cady's behaviour, Lily Collias revealed that Javier Bardem was particularly careful before filming this Cape Fear scene, even apologizing to her in advance. This is what the actress revealed to Variety:

“In Episode 10, there’s one point where he has to grab me by my hair, and before the scene, he’s like, ‘I’m so sorry, my love. Is it OK if I just — I’m going to grab you like that?’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, that’s fine.’ Then we start rolling and I see this thing coming up to me, and I’m like, ‘What the f*ck?! Well, OK, that’s your job!’”

Breaking down this intense scene, Javier Bardem gave a peek inside his approach while tackling a challenging segment. The No Country for Old Men actor revealed that he treats such scenes as a game and uses his imagination to create things that do not exist in real life.

Cape Fear concluded with a quiet victory for the Bowdens, after Anna decided not to kill Max in front of her children and let the law decide his fate. While Max was put behind bars, Natalie was left with the DNA test, suggesting that her connection with Javier Bardem's character is far from over.
