Charlotte Alice Harper is the baby of Anna Andrews (Tessa Thompson) and Jack Harper (Jon Bernthal) in His & Hers, who died suddenly while in the care of Alice, Anna’s mother, a year before the events depicted in the series.

The death doesn’t affect the storyline in terms of the murders, but has an impact on Anna and Jack. The murders, which are part of the thriller series, are taking place in Dahlonega, Georgia, and the killer is revealed to be Anna’s mother, Alice.

It is clear that the specter of Charlotte's death is a reflection of Anna and Jack's personal loss. The series begins with them trying to deal with their loss and relationship problems. On the other hand, the story pertaining to the deaths of Anna's high school friends is a part of Alice's personal agenda regarding exacting revenge on people who harmed her daughter in the past.

Why is the character of Charlotte important?

The confusion regarding Charlotte arises because her death happens around the timeline of the events featured within the series, as well as the high stakes involved regarding Anna’s and Jack’s families.

Being that the series combines family issues with a high-stakes murder case, it led people to erroneously connect Charlotte’s death with the murder events involving Rachel, Helen, or Zoe.

While the death of Charlotte strongly impacts Anna and Jack, it is no motive for the murders. It is all the design and plan of Alice, who is driven by her daughter, Anna, having been s*xually assaulted on her 16th birthday by two boys in her school. It is an extremely pivotal point to differentiate the death of Charlotte, which influences the emotional background, but it does not have any connection with the deeds perpetrated by Alice.

The true emotional core of His & Hers

The core tragedy for His & Hers revolves around Anna's s*xual assault at the age of 16 at a birthday party. Anna was assaulted by some older boys who were invited by Rachel, along with some fellow females, Helen and Zoe.

Catherine Kelly, who would later become Lexy Jones, was also at the party but escaped after being molested herself. This incident impacts Anna's entire life and the way her mother, Alice, looks at justice.

The death of Charlotte simply serves to further this end. Although a tragic event in and of itself, even this serves to accentuate themes of grief and the repercussions surrounding untold pain. The events surrounding the death of Charlotte help to further explore this pain in relation to both Anna and Jack.

However, this event is not in any way related to the murder that permeates the series.

What actually drives the murders in His & Hers

In His & Hers, the killings are perpetrated by Alice, who has been Anna's mother, out of revenge. This happens because of the involvement of Rachel, Helen, and Zoe in Anna's assault on her. In both novels, each of the murders has been well planned by the character carrying out the killing spree.

Additionally, in His & Hers, the culprit has framed someone else in order to mislead the enquiries. Netflix Tudum says that through Alice’s confessional letter to Anna, she reveals that she is a killer and also reveals logic related to these killings that aren’t connected to Charlotte’s death.

Alice does this to cover up her tracks, as if she were a clever killer, so that no one would suspect anything related to her, and as a means to make everyone believe that she has dementia.

Catherine “Lexy” Kelly’s role in the series

Catherine Kelly, now known as Lexy Jones, is initially suspected by Anna, Jack, and Priya due to her past and mysterious behavior. In the course of a violent fight, Lexy tries to shoot Anna, and Priya shoots her to death, mistakenly taking her to be the killer.

It was later confirmed in the series through the confessional letter from Alice that Lexy was actually the innocent one. The real killer was revealed to be the character of Alice, with Lexy’s death being the outcome of miscommunication.

Anna and Jack's relationship explained

Anna and Jack's marriage had already been troubled because of the trauma and grief following Charlotte's death. The separation among the characters takes place before the onset of the series.

During the course of His & Hers, they reunite as they try to cope through the investigation and learning about Alice’s activities. Towards the end of the series, Anna is pregnant, and they also take in Meg, who refers to Zoe’s orphaned daughter.

The death of Charlotte Alice Harper is a fact established within the show and a source of pain for Anna and Jack. Still, the mystery of murder is completely about Alice's seeking revenge due to her daughter's assault some years ago. A wrong implication points at Lexy, whom Priya shoots dead, but eventually, it is Alice revealed as the murderer.

At the end of His & Hers, Anna and Jack get back together, adopt Meg, and pay their respects to the memory of Charlotte, who does not affect the murders or the mystery chaining around.

His & Hers is still a story of trauma, revenge, and family, but Charlotte's loss wraps it in with the personal stakes for the main characters while keeping the murder investigation fully centered on Alice's retribution.
