How Tony & Ziva's story fits into NCIS Season 24 after scrapped spin-off

NCIS Season 24 will bring Tony DiNozzo back. Tony DiNozzo's return will happen at a very different point in the story with Ziva. After the first season of NCIS: Tony & Ziva ended with the two finally finding their way back to each other, the spinoff was canceled, leaving their future in a slightly unusual place.

Michael Weatherly will return as Tony, who is heading to Washington, D.C., while working on expanding his private security company. Ziva, meanwhile, is staying with their daughter Tali, who is now at boarding school just a few hours away from D.C. That distance leaves plenty of room for their stories to cross again.

What makes this more interesting is that getting back together did not necessarily solve everything between the couple. Their feelings for each other may be clear, but actually making their relationship work has always been harder.

And I believe that NCIS Season 24 can explore that side of their story through Tony, even if Ziva is not immediately by his side. Want to get more details on this? Continue reading!

Tony and Ziva may be together, but NCIS Season 24 isn't giving them an easy reset

Tony and Ziva finally reached a point where they could be together after years of missed chances, complications, and everything else that came between them. By the end of the spin-off, they were even raising Tali, which made it look like they'd got the kind of family life fans had been waiting for.

But I don't think Season 24 of the flagship series is treating that reunion as a simple happy ending. Tony and Ziva have never really struggled with their feelings for each other. The harder part has been figuring out how to actually be together without their complicated history getting in the way.

That makes their current situation even more interesting. Tony will be in Washington, D.C., but Ziva is staying with Tali due to her boarding school, which is a few hours away.

They aren’t suddenly strangers, and there’s no indication that their relationship has suddenly disintegrated. But then, they’re not exactly living a settled family life together, either.

To me, that leaves room for NCIS Season 24 to explore what their reunion really means, without undoing everything the spinoff established. Ziva’s distance also leaves much to the imagination. Even if she doesn't immediately step back into the main action, she could still be an important part of Tony’s story.

Tony's return could give NCIS Season 24 a way to keep Ziva's story alive

Tony's return in NCIS Season 24 is also interesting because he isn't simply going back to his old job. He is opening a D.C. branch of his private security company, and a tip about an NCIS situation is what pulls him back toward his former team.

That gives the show a pretty natural way to keep Tony connected to NCIS. His security work can still be part of his life, but his past with the agency keeps pulling him into new situations.

And that is where Ziva can still make a difference, even from a distance. The show has previously stated that Ziva and Tali won’t be appearing in Season 24, but executive producer Steven D. Binder has said Ziva’s "presence will definitely be felt."

I actually think this works better than making Ziva fit into the story just for the sake of it. Of course, if it comes to Tony’s choices, his connection to Tali, and his new life in D.C., they can keep their family situation in the background.
