VisionQuest introduces us to Ruaridh Mollica's Thomas Shepherd, a young man fresh out of the British foster care system. Thomas has been described as street-smart and a grifter, and his first appearance involves him conning a man. Thus, there is more to this young man than what he let us know in the first episode.

The second episode further delves into his past, which is important to the future of the MCU. Turns out, in addition to being a grifter, Thomas also has some powers that he has kept a secret. This culminates in the final act of the third VisionQuest episode in which Thomas brings back Vision to life by rebooting him. In the fourth episode Thomas again uses his power to save the tech executive, Katerina Wells.

But Wells is ultimately killed a few scenes later thanks to Ultron's actions, who has taken control of Vision's body. But Thomas's powers are still impressive, as it seems that he is faster than the android Jocasta, who tried to murder Wells.

VisionQuest - Why is Thomas Shepherd so fast?

The reason behind Thomas Shepherd's speed powers is because he is the reincarnation of Tommy Maximoff, the other twin son of Wanda and Vision. We met child Tommy in WandaVision. In that series, we learn that Wanda birthed Tommy and Billy inside the magical hex by using chaos magic, instead of using the traditional birthing means with Vision.

If you remember, Wanda had created a sitcom hex surrounding the entire town of Westview, forcing the residents to act in her sitcom reality in the 2021 series. However, she finally brought down the hex at the end of the WandaVision finale, but that also meant that Billy and Tommy "died". However, it seems that the twins' souls had some powers thanks to the chaos magic.

We saw this occur in the opening scene of Agatha All Along Episode 6, which is a flashback set in the immediate aftermath of Wanda bringing down the Westview hex. This flashback follows the young teen William Kaplan before he meets with a fatal accident. However, there is a twist, though: Billy Maximoff's soul (which is powered by Wanda's chaos magic) enters William's body, giving him the former's powers.

The same happens in the penultimate Agatha All Along Episode, which sees Agatha and Billy guiding Tommy's soul into a drowning young boy's body. Thomas describes this event in the third VisionQuest episode, which finally convinces Vision that the young man is indeed his son. Like what happened with Billy, Thomas also has Tommy's powers.

Wanda possibly gave Tommy the powers of speed based on her own twin brother Pietro Maximoff/Quicksilver's powers. However, Tommy also has his father's phasing powers. It seems that a key portion of the series is building up to the moment when Tommy embraces his comic book title of "Speed".

Moreover, it is expected that Tommy's VisionQuest role will set up another major Marvel Cinematic Universe project.

VisionQuest might be setting up the Young Avengers:

The Young Avengers, as the name suggests, is a group of superheroes who used to be sidekicks or kids of popular superheroes. As of now, young superheroes like Ms. Marvel/Kamala Khan, Iron Heart/Riri Williams, Kate Bishop, Eli Bradley/Patriot, Cassie Lang, Wiccan/Billy Maximoff, and Speed/Tommy Maximoff have been introduced by the MCU.

For years, rumors have suggested that the MCU is adapting the young team. But as the MCU pivoted hard to Doctor Doom, it is unclear when we are getting this long-rumored project. But Ruaridh Mollica, who plays Tommy in the Disney+ MCU series, let it slip that he prepared for the role of Tommy Maximoff by reading Young Avengers comics:

"All of the Young Avengers comics. I literally bought them. There's that one of like me and Wiccan on the front, and there's one of, you know, Tommy. He's in like an office, like yawning at his desk, and yeah, I got all of them, of course. Like, what better way to understand the character than how he's written?"

Do you think VisionQuest will lead to the long-rumored Young Avengers project?
