Hulu's Furious looks like true crime, but its origins are very different

Right after Hulu dropped the trailer for Furious, the anticipation surrounding this intense crime drama has been increasing among the viewers. The broody atmosphere, along with the thrilling mystery surrounding the serial killer in this series, has been an intriguing factor from the get-go.

However, a question arose regarding the origins of the story. After watching how realistic the storyline is in the series from the trailer along with the description, many have wondered whether the series is based on real-life incidents. However, the truth about the origins of this series is quite interesting.

Through the snippets that can be seen in the trailer of Furious, along with the storyline that the series unfolds, the question about whether the series is based on real-life incidents arises. However, it must be noted that though the series is not based on real-life incidents, it takes some inspiration from Black Widow movie, where Debra Winger takes on the role of Alexandra, an analyst whose life takes a turn after she becomes obsessed with finding the truth about a serial murder case.

This 1987 movie inspired creator Elizabeth Meriwether and intrigued her to think about the “possibility of exploring the psychology of a female serial killer”. In Furious, the storyline dives into an FBI agent’s dedication and relentlessness in catching a female serial killer. As this FBI agent gets more and more involved in the case, her life begins to get intertwined with that of the serial killer, creating a complicated situation for her.

Elizabeth Meriwether, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, also revealed that the aspect of “complicating the narrative” of women being “good victims” also drew her in. In Furious, both Alice Black, the FBI agent who searches for the serial killer, and Catherine have “experienced violence in their past,” and these violent incidents have become a driving factor in their lives, changing them differently.

The series also does not fall into the “good cop/bad cop” aspect, as the goal was to “never” let the viewers “settle” into a particular “dynamic” and keep bringing more and more depth so that the true nature of the characters can be unfolded with each episode. The focus of the series is to make the viewers involved in the storyline as much as possible so that there is a “confusion” related to who the “bad character” is in the storyline.

Emmy Rossum takes on the role of FBI Agent Alice Black. Some of the other cast members of Furious are Lola Petticrew, Jake Lacy, Scoot McNairy, Rob Yang. Danny McCarthy, etc. Lola Petticrew takes on the role of the killer in the series. Besides taking on the role of Alice in the series, Emmy Rossum is also the executive producer of this series.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Emmy Rossum notes that the aspect of having two “female superpowers” as the leads in the storyline who, on the surface, might seem different but have many similarities within is “interesting”. Both Alice and the serial killer, Catherine, have intertwining storylines related to violence that have eventually caused them to look for “justice” in their own ways.

The fact that both Alice and Catherine get “underestimated” also becomes a driving factor for the two of them to “work outside the lanes of convention”. Though the series takes inspiration from the 1987 movie, there are many differences between the two of them, especially regarding how the characters are built and the setting.
