It was not an easy task for Hunter Schafer to take on the role of Cora in Blade Runner 2099. Silka Luisa, showrunner of this upcoming series, had already informed her about the intense nature of the action sequences, which Schafer will have to take on during the filming process.

However, instead of getting intimidated, Hunter Schafer took on the challenge and was able to deliver the intensity of the action sequences with distinct skill. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Schafer gets candid about the challenges that her character posed for her during the filming process and how it became one of the “favorite parts of acting” for her. In the interview, she notes,

“I’ve learned that action is maybe one of my favorite parts of acting now.”

Hunter Schafer on doing action sequences and more in Blade Runner 2099

In the interview, Hunter Schafer pointed out how the Blade Runner 2099 showrunner informed her about the “intense” nature of the action sequences from the get-go, with “an air of a warning”. When she began filming the scenes, she quickly understood it, even as the storyline was introduced to her at the time of the script reading.

However, eventually, doing the action sequences caused her to “love it,” leading to “action” becoming one of her “favorite parts of acting”. While discussing the physical toll the action sequences took during the filming of Blade Runner 2099, Schafer notes that it was a “big lifestyle change” for her.

During the filming process, she had to do a significant amount of “movement every day” and also had to be on her feet. She ran “out of breath”, threw herself “over objects” and even “under or on them” during the whole process. Hence, she was “getting exercise" and "eating more”.

She also speaks about the difficulty that she had to face because she “was a smoker” during the time of filming Blade Runner 2099. As a result, during the scenes where she had to “chase”, it was a “little hard on the lungs” for her. However, despite the toll it took on her body, according to Schafer, it was “a really exciting, fun challenge”. In the interview, she points out that doing action sequences requires the actors to be “present,” which is “always the goal as an actor”.

Blade Runner 2099 also has a distinct fight scene between Hunter Schafer and Sam C. Wilson’s characters. While speaking about filming these action sequences, Schafer adds how “much fun” they had during the process even though neither of them had done a fight sequence that lasted for such a prolonged period of time. She compares filming this scene to “learning a dance in a lot of ways,” as there is a process of finding a balance between the “scrappiness and the choreography”.

Both Michelle Yeoh, who takes on a significant role as Olwen in Blade Runner 2099, and Silka Luisa have appreciated Schafer’s skills in delivering the action sequences. In the interview, Michelle Yeoh points out that Schafer was able to run “fast” for the scenes and also has a “very unique way of moving,” which enhances the scenes.
