The "brothers" rumor surrounding Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey started with just one family vacation conversation.
Harrelson, who stars opposite Matthew McConaughey in the upcoming Apple TV+ series Brothers, appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! This week. During his conversation with Kimmel, the Venom: Let There Be Carnage star opened up about the rumor surrounding him and Matthew McConaughey being related.
Harrelson shared that he and McConaughey's mother, Mary Kathleen "Kay" McConaughey, were watching the US women's soccer team win the World Cup a number of years ago. He said:
"We were talking, and I mentioned my father. I forgot why, and she goes, "I knew… your father." That ellipsis was so long between the knew and the father. Like I'm thinking something there. And also it's like I've known you for 25 years. You're just telling me that you knew my dad."
He continued:
"And then I start to… there's an investigation start. It stirs the whole family up, like my kids call Matthew "Uncle Matthew" and vice versa."

Woody Harrelson reveals the story behind the Matthew McConaughey "brothers" rumor
Speaking about the rumored family connection during Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Woody Harrelson said that they started doing some investigation to get more details. Harrelson said that when Matthew's mother went to the hospital to give birth, she told Jim McConaughey:
"Come on, Jim, I'm giving birth."
According to Harrelson, Jim said he was not going because he believed the baby was not his. Harrelson then pointed out that Matthew's parents had been married three times, and it was during their second divorce that Matthew's mother met Charles Harrelson. He said the timing made the math add up.
During his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Woody also opened up about the DNA test that he was okay with doing to find out if they were actually related. Woody explained that he understood why Matthew didn't want to do it:
"He doesn't lose a father. He gains a father he never met."
Earlier this week, while talking to The Hollywood Reporter about the DNA test, Matthew said that if the rumor was true he had "a lot to unpack," but if it was not true, hanging out with Woody wouldn't be nearly as fun. He added that they should just keep floating the idea because he doesn't want Woody to be upset.
Woody Harrelson is not the only one to talk about the connection. Matthew McConaughey talked about the same on TODAY, claiming that the idea that he and Woody Harrelson could be brothers first came up around nine years ago during a family vacation.
