"I don't like surprises": Grey's Anatomy Season 23 finally gives Amelia a relationship that isn't an uphill battle

Grey's Anatomy Season 23, episode 4, followed Amelia and Toni facing an issue in their relationship. While Amelia is known for avoiding problems in her relationships or becoming extremely defensive over them, this time she works it out with Toni in a healthy manner.

Not only is this change surprising, but it appears that Grey's Anatomy Season 23 is finally giving Amelia a relationship that isn't an uphill battle.

Grey's Anatomy Season 23 changes things for Amelia

In Grey's Anatomy Season 23, episode 4, Toni secretly clears and reschedules Amelia's surgeries behind her back to surprise her with a weekend getaway. Initially, it looks like Amelia is just unhappy because Toni made the changes without consulting with her first, which is a valid reason to get upset.

However, as we later find out, Amelia was upset because she doesn't like surprises. Towards the end of the episode, when the couple resolves the fight, we see Amelia say:

"I don't like surprises..."

She explains to Toni that having a predictable routine and the ability to plan ahead is how she maintains her sobriety and sense of control. They then talk things through openly, and while Toni offers to cancel the weekend getaway, Amelia stops her. She admits that she does want to go on the weekend getaway and spend some quiet and private time with her.

But, Amelia does insist on getting a full rundown of the itinerary beforehand, and Toni tells her not to worry about that because they will spend the entire weekend in the hotel room. With this moment, Grey's Anatomy Season 23 has given Amelia a relationship from which she isn't actively trying to run anymore.

Earlier, whenever Amelia got into a fight with someone she was dating, she would either lash out emotionally, avoid the issue entirely, or have a full-blown emotional spiral. Because of her past trauma of losing her loved ones and her struggle with addiction, any kind of conflict often triggered her flight response or made her push her partners away before they could leave her.

For instance, when things got difficult or serious with Owen Hunt, Amelia frequently fled. During major arguments, particularly the ones about having children or handling trauma, Amelia would hide out at Stephanie Edwards' apartment or completely shut down emotionally to avoid dealing with the issue directly.

Moreover, Amelia also had a pattern of destroying a relationship if she sensed that it was failing or that she was about to be abandoned. This old pattern resurfaced right before she and Toni fully committed to one another. When Toni became distant due to her ex-wife, Amelia immediately assumed that Toni was rejecting her and defensively slept with Cass Beckman.

However, as we see in the latest Grey's Anatomy Season 23 episode, Amelia has figured out how to deal with fights or issues in a relationship. She has realized that every relationship doesn't have to be an uphill battle just because she might have some disagreements with her partner.
