In an interview with ScreenTime, actor David Thewlis, who played Remus Lupin in the Harry Potter films, stated he is not interested in reprising his role in the Wizarding World universe. This may indicate that he has completely moved on from the character and role that many fans still feel so much affection for.

In addition to that, Thewlis stated that he feels "far too old" to play the role. In addition to his previously stated opinion, Thewlis commented that he is finished with the movies and has no desire to be associated with them anymore; thus, there is no possibility of an appearance in the future. Fans have been eager to learn about any reprisal or return of the original cast members; however, he has made his feelings about returning clear, and does not wish to do anything involving the franchise.

Thewlis played Lupin for the first time in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in 2004. Despite the strong connection and loyalty from many fans for his character in that movie, he has voiced an interest in pursuing other projects and moving on from Harry Potter.

Thewlis says he is done with the franchise

When Thewlis was asked during the ScreenTime interview if he would be open to returning as Lupin or even playing a new character in the reboot, he gave a clear, honest answer. He said,

"I feel like I'd be far too old to play my original character, and, no, I wouldn't want to go back into it."

He followed it with another line that made his feelings even clearer:

"I've had quite enough of that. I'm sick of talking about it, quite honestly."

He said this with a laugh, but it still showed that the topic had worn him out over the years. Thewlis also talked about how often he is asked about Lupin, even today. He said he understands why fans care so much, especially younger fans who grew up with the movies. He said,

"It is nice because with Harry Potter it's kids, and kids get very kind of impressed and very overawed, and it's very nice to make kids happy."

The actor has enjoyed spending time and talking with fans of the movies, mostly children; however, he has decided it is time for him to try other types of work, as he is grateful to the past but ready for something more.

The actor has also joked about his time working on the Harry Potter franchise; he indicated on Instagram in 2023 that he doesn't remember the name of any of the particular films, and was making reference to a bag of lupin flour, indicating he wishes to completely dissociate from the role once and for all, but still create occasions for people to laugh with him.

The actor is currently promoting the second season of his show, The Artful Dodger, which will be made available from February 10, exclusively on Disney+. His attention has now shifted away from working at Hogwarts toward new opportunities in the future.

The Harry Potter reboot moves forward without Thewlis

In 2023, HBO made the exciting announcement of a complete television reboot of the Harry Potter series. The plan is for this TV show to build and recreate the stories of each of J.K. Rowling's seven books of the series across the span of new seasons of the show, with one book being adapted into a season. The hope is that this series will be made available for viewers to watch by 2027. Production is currently being completed, with updates regarding any cast additions coming to light on a slow basis.

Recently, three of our young leads have been cast, they are: Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. These leads anchor the new cast for this new series; therefore, we know for certain that we will have a totally different cast than what was presented in the original films.

Other major roles have been announced, including John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Nick Frost as Hagrid and Papa Essiedu as Severus Snape. All these casting choices clearly show that HBO's production of this franchise will be a totally different interpretation from the original film series.

According to one source, Thewlis' decision not to reprise the role of Lupin aligns with the new direction taken by the Harry Potter franchise and the new team working on the show. Many people were hoping to see him return in the new series as one of the most prominent characters in the Harry Potter universe and a loved character among many fans, but it seems that isn't going to happen now.

Although Thewlis has made a choice to leave the franchise, Harry Potter will continue to evolve and grow. Through the implementation of the new series, the next generation of Harry Potter fans will be able to come on board as they did two decades ago when the original films premiered.
