Kelly Reilly's new murder mystery Under Salt Marsh has become the talk of the town in a short time, and it's a gripping new thriller that will definitely remind you of ITV's hit 2013 crime drama Broadchurch.
The two shows share a similar backdrop, and even though we only have two episodes of the Sky TV thriller so far, the plot is apparently unfolding as expected.
At the core of the story is the unexpected death of a kid, which sends a series of shock waves through the town and an eventual murder investigation that brings a rather unconventional (and unloved) detective to solve the case.
While Broadchurch is set somewhere along the coast of Dorsetshire, South West England, Under Salt Marsh borders the sea of Wales and centers on an imaginary town called Morfa Halen. To find out more about the similarities between the two crime thrillers, keep reading.
Why Under Salt Marsh is a must watch for all Broadchurch fans? Details explored
It is time for all David Tennant fans to assemble, as the perfect Broadchurch replacement is now streaming on Sky TV. The story of the Claire Oakley thriller opens with the shocking death of a local kid named Cefin Hall, which resurfaces the wounds of a three-year-old case of disappearance in Morfa Halen.
A rather hated detective, Eric Bull, arrives in town to solve the case. Apparently, he has some twisted history with his ex-colleague (now the local school's teacher), Jackie Ellis, owing to the last investigation. On the other hand, Broadchurch sets an intense tone of a perfect murder mystery when an eleven-year-old local boy, Danny Latimer, winds up dead along the coast.
Olivia Colman portrays one of the lead characters, a detective working the case. She is joined by Detective Inspector Alec Hardy (portrayed by David Tennant). While the two struggle to team up because of their differences, the mysteries of the coastal town add to the tension of the plot.
In Under Salt Marsh, a similar dynamic is seen developing between Detective Eric Bull and Jackie Ellis as the pair tries to connect the dots in Cefin's investigation (which is apparently a murder). However, in Morfa Halen, there is a forecast of a huge storm coming in, which will probably wash away all the evidence of the case.
So, time is running out for the detectives to solve the two cases which might be related through darker secrets of the town that no one knows. On the other hand, Broadchurch has three seasons (supposed to be a trilogy anyway), but the complexities of the investigation remain the same as we see in Under Salt Marsh.
Moreover, a coastal location with natural elements like rain and thunderstorm add more to the suspense of the two stories with occasional thrilling developments. Both Broadchurch and Under Salt Marsh deal with the heaviness of small-town folks agitated by untimely and unprecedented deaths and thus have a similar central theme. While it's too early to predict how Under Salt Marsh's plot unravels, Broadchurch lovers should definitely swing by the Sky TV thriller for more surprises.
