Imperfect Women Episode 4 recap: Nancy

In Imperfect Women Episode 4, it is discovered that Nancy's life was very hard growing up. Her mother was an alcoholic, and her stepfather, Scott, abused her from a very early age. Due to her hard life and money being tight, Nancy began to think life was all about transactions.
She knew what was happening to her was wrong, but she remained silent because Scott had paid her to pursue ballet. Rather than protecting her, her mother blamed Nancy when she discovered the truth. She became envious and assumed Nancy was the cause of her marriage falling apart.
Her mother then took a terrifying step when, driving recklessly with Nancy in the car, she deliberately crashed it. This is why Nancy is so scarred physically and emotionally. She is terrified of being punished for not being 'good enough'.
Nancy hasn't even fully come to terms with this trauma, even as an adult. For example, by the end of Imperfect Women Episode 4, she looks up Scott on Facebook, and it is clear that the ghosts of her past still have a grip on her.
Imperfect Women Episode 4 - Life with Robert and the pressure to be perfect
Nancy's life begins to change when she marries Robert, from an affluent and powerful family. She enters the world of riches that is distant from her childhood. Unfortunately, she can never feel as though she fits in.
Nancy has been throwing elaborate New Year’s parties for 18 years. She is proud of them because it gives her a feeling of things being perfect and under control. But this year is different. Robert seems distant, drinking too much, and no longer seems proud of her like he used to, as seen in Imperfect Women Episode 4.
Nancy always feels as though she is working to prove herself in Robert's world. Despite having Robert's love, she is still not wholly secure in his life. Her insecurity becomes even more pronounced when Robert's father mentions it is unfortunate that there cannot be a party again next year, leading Nancy to worry that something is wrong.
In Imperfect Women Episode 4, her worst fears are realized when she sneakily checks her husband’s laptop and discovers an email referencing "separation of assets" that looks suspiciously like he was planning on a divorce. This blows her life apart, and she begins to question everything.

Tension with Cora leads to a breaking point
Nancy is also not on good terms with Cora. Her daughter feels neglected and thinks Nancy is most interested in preserving appearances than in her own family.
In Imperfect Women Episode 4, things take a turn for the worse when Cora gets all dressed up for a "white trash" themed party. While Cora finds it amusing, Nancy finds it too close to home and lashes out by slapping Cora in front of everyone.
She instantly wishes she had never done it and feels humiliated. It is in this moment that her anxiety builds, and Nancy begins to think she is turning into her mother. Her friends, Mary and Eleanor, make her feel better and let her know it was only a mistake.
Friendship, support, and hidden cracks
In Imperfect Women Episode 4, we see that Eleanor and Mary are both significant figures in reminding Nancy to stay level-headed. Mary, who has a more optimistic outlook on life, mentions that her husband, Howard, is having a hard time at work and that they are finding it difficult to make ends meet. Nancy offers her support and later tries to help the couple by finding Howard a job.
For all her riches, Nancy's relationships reveal creaks. Some treat her as if she were a wandering trader. Even within Robert's family, she is judged and never fully accepted.
Imperfect Women Episode 4 - The truth about “David”
The biggest question throughout the story has been: Who is David?
In Imperfect Women Episode 4, Nancy is approached by the bartender named David at the party, and when he gives her his number, she spits in his face and turns away, revealing that he is not the mysterious David that her story is about.
The twist comes later when it is discovered that Mary's husband, Howard, is the David in question. When Nancy helps him get a job, he says somebody called him David by mistake. They jokingly call each other by the wrong names, but the moment is already thick with meaning.
So far, it appears that Nancy and Howard might have grown closer at work, and when Nancy's life started falling apart, he was the one she turned to. It is not certain whether this "friendship" develops into something else, but it should call into question Howard's motives.

Emotional ending of Imperfect Women Episode 4
After the chaotic scenes, Nancy attempts to make amends and say sorry to Cora. Robert intervenes and suggests she needs to leave Cora alone, which leads to more disharmony.
This time, Nancy is left to ruminate by herself. She is haunted by her past, driven to destruction by her marriage, and lost in her identity. Imperfect Women Episode 4 ends on an eerie note that Nancy's past always catches up with her, no matter how far she has come.
Imperfect Women Episode 4 is pivotal. It begins to unveil how Nancy's lifelong struggle with her trauma, insecurities, and disorder has affected her. As her own castle of cards is slowly falling, she is revealing her past and tying the knot for future major revelations.
What Episode 4 really does is not just unearth the darkness in Nancy's life; it explores the nature of that darkness and makes sense of it. It demonstrates that the rosy life she has led is built upon some long-standing pain and unsustainable relationships.
