The Trial of Louise Woodward is about one of the most discussed and viral criminal cases of the late 1990s. The five-part HBO drama is based on the 1997 case involving 18-year-old British au pair Louise Woodward, who was working for American doctors Deborah and Sunil Eappen in Massachusetts.

Their eight-month-old son, Matthew, was in Woodward's care when she called 911 after finding him unresponsive and struggling to breathe. Matthew had suffered serious head injuries and died days later after his life support was withdrawn.

Woodward was then charged with first-degree murder, with prosecutors arguing that she had violently shaken and struck Matthew. Her defense argues about how the injuries had occurred and when they had been sustained, presenting Woodward as a young and inexperienced caregiver rather than someone who had intentionally harmed the child.

The case attracted intense attention in both Britain and the United States. A jury eventually found Woodward guilty of second-degree murder. However, Judge Hiller B.
