Inside Adults prequel episode: Paul Baker’s entry, potential Season 2 plotlines and more

Ahead of Season 2's premiere, Adults has released a surprise prequel episode, titled "Marathon Day," with a runtime of twenty minutes. The episode revealed how Paul Baker joined the group and met Issa.

On the other hand, the episode also emphasized the group's friendship, as instead of asking Anton to come clean, they cover up for Anton's lie and make sure nobody finds out his marathon secret.

The sudden release of the Adults prequel episode has also hinted at the plot of the upcoming season. Directed by Ben Kronengold and Rebecca Shaw, the first season was released last year in May and consisted of eight episodes in total. The series will return for Season 2 on August 27, with new episodes arriving on FX and Hulu.

Adults prequel episode reveals how Paul Baker joined the friend group

Titled "Marathon Day," the Adults prequel episode opens with Issa, Samir, Anton, and Billie hanging out in Samir's home. Issa searches for her phone and finds another phone that belonged to Billie after the group casually dances on the ringtone. As the episode progresses, it shows Anton's coworkers cheering for him at the marathon, making the group help him continue his lie of being a participant in the marathon.

Until now, there had been no sign of Paul Baker in the group, but the episode finally introduces him. While Samir and Issa are talking and having food, Paul, a marathon participant, arrives at the camp and falls in after asking for water and saying he needs to use the bathroom.

Issa comes to Paul's rescue, asking for water and a Diet Coke, and Paul calls her pretty. Issa later reveals to her friends that she sent Paul in the Uber. Turns out, Paul was sent to their place, where he later meets Anton as Anton tries to hide from his coworkers, who believe that he is still running in the marathon.

Anton helps Paul with his cramps, and the two talk about friendship. Anton explains that friends are supposed to lie for each other and soon jumps out of the building only to return home through the front door.

Just as Anton's friends try to cover up his lie about having the medal, Paul steps in to help by giving Anton his own medal and saying thanks for letting him borrow it. While talking to Issa, Paul reveals that he doesn't like running and just wanted to meet new people as they become friends.

What does the Adults prequel episode reveal about Season 2?

From the prequel episode, viewers can expect a love triangle in the upcoming season. In the prequel episode, Issa and Samir are the first ones to meet Paul, with Issa helping him out and a deep sharing moment, as told by Paul to Anton.

Later, Paul saves Anton by covering his lie. In the first season, viewers also see Anton and Paul deciding to marry each other, but with the surprise prequel, the makers might be hinting at the love triangle that might get explored in Adult Season 2.

Additionally, Adults Season 2 will focus on the group dealing with new challenges and relationship drama. Viewers will also see Samir and Carly's romance moving forward and the possibilities of Billie exploring her dating life.

The Adults Prequel episode was released on July 31 at 1 p.m. ET on FX. The episode is also available to stream on Hulu, with subscriptions starting at $11.99 per month. The episode is only twenty minutes long, matching the runtime of other episodes, which usually range between twenty and twenty-seven minutes each.
