A case that haunted the early 2000s was the disappearance of Natalee Holloway. Holloway was an 18-year-old American high school graduate from Mountain Brook, Alabama, who went on an unofficial graduation trip to Aruba with 124 fellow graduates. On May 30, 2005, when the group was supposed to fly back home, Natalee did not arrive at the airport.
She had been missing since then, and her remains were never recovered. In 2023, the prime suspect in the case confessed to killing her. Netflix's upcoming three-part docuseries, Taken: Natalee Holloway, will explore the case and Natalee's mother's 20-year fight for answers.
Natalee Holloway's case remained unsolved for almost 20 years
In the early hours of May 30, 2005, Natalee Holloway disappeared after last being seen leaving the Carlos 'n Charlie's nightclub in Oranjestad, Aruba. She left the club in a car with a Dutch local named Joran van der Sloot and two of his Surinamese friends, Deepak and Satish Kalpoe.
The case garnered massive international media attention and an extensive investigation by Aruban authorities, the FBI, Dutch military, and volunteers. Despite all the efforts, no trace or physical remains of Holloway were recovered. Almost two decades later, Joran van der Sloot confessed to killing Natalee Holloway.

In October 2023, Joran van der Sloot confessed in a legal proffer that he bludgeoned Holloway with a cinder block on a beach in Aruba after she rejected his sexual advances. He then dumped her body into the ocean.
Joran van der Sloot pleaded guilty in U.S. federal court in Alabama. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison in the U.S., running concurrently with a 28-year murder sentence he was already serving in Peru for a separate murder.
20 years after Natalee disappeared, her mother, Beth Holloway, will tell the complete story of the case for the first time in the Netflix docuseries, Taken: Natalee Holloway. It is well-known that not knowing where one's child is is a horrifying experience. But there are many parts of the case the public may not know that Beth Holloway is expected to bring to light.
Besides that, according to the docuseries' official synopsis, it will also cover the following:
...revisit the case through the eyes of those closest to Natalee, revealing forgotten moments, previously unreported elements in the case, and its lasting impact. With exclusive access to investigators and never-before-seen footage, this series dives into the tragic story that dominated national news and a mother’s unrelenting search for truth and justice.
As Deadline reports, speaking about the docuseries, president of Documentary and Unscripted at Story Syndicate, Jon Bardin, said:
“We are deeply honored that Beth Holloway has trusted us with her story, and, through it, the story of her daughter, Natalee. Beth’s tireless twenty-year pursuit of justice is a testament to the power of her love, and we can’t wait to share this definitive telling of her story with the world.”
The docuseries is directed by Dani Sloane and Matthew Galkin and executive produced by Liz Garbus, Dan Cogan, Jon Bardin, Dani Sloane, and Tommy Coriale. The production company behind the docuseries is Story Syndicate.
Taken: Natalee Holloway will be released on Netflix on November 4, 2026.
