Elena Milagro Hoyos case: The story of Carl Tanzler's obsession
Who was Carl Tanzler?
Carl Tanzler, also known as Karl Tänzler von Cosel, was born in Dresden, Germany, on February 8, 1877. He traveled through many countries before moving to the United States. Around 1920, he reportedly married Doris Schäfer. The couple had two daughters. Around seven years later, he left his family in Florida and moved to Key West, where he worked as a radiology technician at a Marine Hospital.
Carl Tanzler meets Elena Milagro Hoyos
On April 22, 1930, Elena Milagro Hoyos arrived at the Marine Hospital for an examination. At that time, she was only twenty years of age, according to Casefile. Elena was diagnosed with tuberculosis. Elena's father used to work in a cigar factory and had three daughters, with Elena being one of them.
Upon her arrival, she also met radiologist Carl Tanzler, who was shocked to see her, thinking she was the same woman who came in his visions as a bride when he was in his twenties.
Four years before Elena met Carl, she got married and suffered a miscarriage because of her deteriorating health. After this, her marriage started falling apart. Though Carl was married, he decided to save Elena and stay with her, believing she was the chosen one for him.
Carl takes care of Elena
In the following days, Elena's health continued to deteriorate. Carl explained to her family that he had his own equipment and would do his best to treat her if they and Elena agreed. They agreed to let him continue treating her.
Carl took a personal interest in Elena and gave her extra attention while she was under medical supervision. He even brought her gifts. However, despite his efforts, her condition continued to worsen.
Carl felt that the only way to save Elena Milagro Hoyos was to get her away from her family because of the cigar and smoke. He even asked her to marry him, but she rejected his proposal. He also told her about the vision he had experienced when he was young. Eventually, he decided to treat her at home instead. According to Ben Harrison's book, he even placed sponge electrodes on her chest and shook her in an attempt to revive her.
Carl also told Elena Milagro Hoyos that they could move to a distant island and spend the rest of their lives together as husband and wife. According to Casefile, she allegedly asked him to take care of her body after her death, and he promised that he would.
Elena dies in 1931
Carl learned about Elena's death from Mario, her brother-in-law. During her final days, Elena's father tried to give her all the happiness he could so she could enjoy whatever time she had left. Her funeral was held at the Hoyos residence, and during the service, Carl placed a letter under her dress expressing his love for her.
After her death, Carl rented Elena's bedroom and even slept in the same bedroom. He also offered to build a grand mausoleum for her if the family allowed him to take care of her remains.
Carl visited the mausoleum every night, reading to Elena Milagro Hoyos and playing the radio for her. However, one night, he suddenly stopped visiting. Elena's sister felt relieved, believing that he had finally moved on.
Carl takes out Elena's body
In April 1933, Carl secretly removed Elena's body from her mausoleum and took it home, later hiding it in an airplane cabin behind the Marine Hospital. Over the next few weeks, Carl tried to preserve Elena's body using chemicals, lotions, and bandages. He removed her clothes, cleaned her remains, and used wires, coat hangers, and rags to hold her body together.
Carl then focused on preserving Elena's face and bought glass eyes to replace hers and made a death mask. He then moved into his airplane cabin and lived alongside Elena's preserved remains for many months until a new Marine Hospital commander ordered him to move the plane.
Carl moved to an old shack at Rest Beach and turned it into a lab to continue working on Elena's body. He placed her in a tank filled with chemicals and used electric treatments, hoping to bring her body back to life. He later claimed that her body had regained weight and looked more like it did when she was alive.
Carl is seen with Elena's body
Carl removed Elena Milagro Hoyos's body from the mausoleum and started living with the corpse. He attempted different ways to preserve the remains so that they don't decay. In 1940, someone told Elena's sister Florinda that Carl was seen dancing with a life-sized doll.
In September of the same year, they confronted Carl and told him that Elena's coffin had been tampered with. Her sister just wanted to make sure that Elena's body was kept safe. They even followed Carl only to see the life-sized wax doll in his bed. The doll also had jewelry and flowers on it. Florinda understood that it was her sister and not a wax figure. Carl said that he'd freed the woman from her tomb and given her a second chance at life.
Additionally, he refused to give Elena's body even when asked to. In the end, the authorities were contacted, and Carl was arrested. In court, he claimed that the two fell in love when she was undergoing tuberculosis treatment and he did his best to save her.
Over the next few months, Carl claimed to hear Elena Milagro Hoyos singing their song from inside her coffin. He believed she wanted him to rescue her from the grave, so he decided to take her out of the tomb and bring her home.
What happened to Carl?
Carl was arrested for removing Elena Milagro Hoyos's body from her grave without permission. In 1940, Elena's preserved body was put on public display.
Elena's estranged husband denied knowing about her relationship with Carl and said Elena had never encouraged his romantic advances. During Carl's hearing, Elena's sister, Florinda, described how horrifying her sister's preserved body looked. When the judge asked Carl if he had sexually abused Elena's body, he denied it.
The judge ordered her remains returned to her family. The charges against Carl were later dropped because the time limit for prosecution had expired. Elena's sister, Florinda, had her remains buried in an unmarked grave to stop Carl from finding her. He eventually moved away from Key West and died alone in 1952.
