Unprotected: Murder in Galicia: The true story of Isabel Fuentes
The Netflix documentary Unprotected: Murder in Galicia opens with the neighbors, all shocked after seeing Isabel Fuentes nearly dead after being attacked in her house. She was admitted to the hospital's intensive care unit, where the authorities even asked her who did this to her.
The case dates back to April 2015, when Isabel Fuentes was found close to death in her home in Pazos, Spain. Many believed that burglars were behind the attack on her. However, the Guardia Civil sergeant handling the case felt that something was wrong with this story and tried to keep Isabel safe from another attack.
The authorities found a hammer as evidence and suspected that an insider did this to her instead of an outsider. The sergeant even tried to warn others and make sure Isabel was better protected while she recovered in the hospital. However, it was not acted upon. Aniceto Rodríguez, Isabel's husband, became a main person in the investigation.
He even spent a long time sitting beside her. However, thirty-seven days later, she was killed in her hospital room, where the doctors kept her so she could recover. Aniceto reportedly injured himself with a knife after killing her and survived. He was taken into custody, and the case was built around him.
It was revealed that he was the one who staged the burglary at the very beginning while attacking her and then killed her in the hospital. In July 2017, he was sentenced to thirty-one years in prison. Many believed that Isabel could have been alive if proper safety measures had been taken to protect her in the hospital, as the authorities had already suspected him before he killed her. Aniceto died fourteen months later in September 2018.
Speaking about the case, Unprotected: Murder in Galicia director Jorge Laplace told Tudum that when he first learned about Isabel Fuentes' story, the details struck him. He added:
"An uncomfortable question I could not explain: How was it possible for her to be murdered in a hospital when it was known that she was in danger?"
The documentary also includes the police, doctors, Isabel's family, neighbors, and journalists sharing details about the case.
Unprotected: Murder in Galicia is scheduled to release on November 6 on Netflix.
