Prime Video’s popular animated sci-fi, superhero drama has never shied away from placing its protagonist in awkward scenarios, but Invincible Season 4 presents one of the greatest twists ever. The show brings in the much-popular demon detective Damien Darkblood, a character with a creepy personality and rather dry sense of humor, missing for several seasons.

Darkblood was previously seen being exiled from Earth at the beginning of the series, and hence, the reappearance is like a long-awaited reunion for the audience. Invincible Season 4 now raises the question: what had become of him after the exile, and how he suddenly requires Mark Grayson’s assistance.

Episode 4 is titled “Hurm," and it takes the story where the series has never been before: Hell itself. Rather than a short appearance, the return of Darkblood turns out to be a big plot that enlarges the supernatural aspect of the Invincible universe.

This comeback is more than a nostalgic event for the longtime fans. It redefines the significance of Darkblood in the storyline and gives us an indication that maybe eventually his reemergence will carry greater implications for the series' future.

Damien Darkblood’s long-awaited return in Invincible Season 4 Episode 4

Damien Darkblood has been one of the most interesting characters in Invincible. The demon detective was particularly distinguished for his rich voice, mysterious language, and incessant pursuit of the truth. Nevertheless, just when the viewers had started enjoying his presence, he was abruptly chased out of the planet and was never seen again in the story. It is only in Invincible Season 4 Episode 4 that we get to know what transpired following his exile.

We see that Darkblood has been engaging in major issues in Hell, where dangerous power games are constantly at play. He finds himself in a bad situation, so he ends up seeking the services of an unlikely friend: Mark Grayson. Their reunion brings some supernatural battles for Mark, completely unlike the alien battles he is accustomed to. The show also adds to the existing mythology by bringing Darkblood back so that viewers can finally have an answer to what became of the detective.

A wild trip to Hell expands the Invincible universe

The reappearance of Darkblood in Invincible Season 4 leads the story to a different place: Hell, quite literally. He is used by the show to demonstrate a more sinister aspect of the Invincible world instead of portraying a normal comeback. Mark is sucked into the game, and he now has to deal with demons and enemies that operate by very different sets of rules than the villains he normally fights.

The episode is not about superheroes and space threats, but rather about a darker fantasy, which indicates that the Invincible world is much larger and weirder than it has been depicted until now. Darkblood also gains more depth. Instead of merely being a detective, he is presented as a survivor of a harsh realm in Invincible Season 4, and his discomfort in working with Mark drives the story forward. The supernatural elements by the end are indicative of the fact that there might be even greater threats in the forthcoming episodes.
