Shrinking Season 3 premiered on Apple TV this Wednesday. It revolves around Jimmy Laird (Jason Segel), a grieving therapist who breaks the rules and shares his feelings with his clients. As with most shows, members of the cast and crew were interviewed by online entertainment outlets. One of these interviews was between Deadline and Jason Segel.

The season 2 finale ended on a more interesting note as Jimmy forgives Louis, the man responsible for the death of Jimmy’s wife, Tia. The closing minutes set up an interesting storyline for Shrinking Season 3, which premiered this week.

What did Jason Segel say about Jimmy's character arc in Shrinking Season 3?

Season 3 will see Jimmy back in the dating scene after a long time, as he tries to balance single parenting with trying to find love again. He has the help of his boss and mentor, Harrison Ford's Paul Rhoades, in this journey. Ahead of the Shrinking Season 3 release, Segel addressed Jimmy's character arc in the previous two seasons:

“We spent Seasons 1 and 2 getting Jimmy to zero, getting him out of this hole of grief and depression he was in. The worst thing happened, and then [in] Season 2 [he was] cleaning up the wreckage that still existed in his life. I think at zero, Jimmy looked forward and realized,’ Oh, my God, everything that I had constructed is going away. My wife is gone. My daughter is leaving.’ I think where we find Jimmy is, ‘Oh, no, did the best part happen? Is the good part of life done? And now I just endure the next 40 years as an observer?’ I think some of us have dealt with that, been at a life changing moment or a crossroads, or something significant ends, and you’re like, ‘Well, I guess it’s done.’ And so, yeah, moving forward sounds fun, but it also means stepping into the unknown”

The Shrinking Season 3 trailer confirms that Segel's How I Met Your Mother co-star Cobie Smulders, who plays Sofi, is a possible romantic partner for Jimmy in this season. Jimmy and Sofi meet for the first time in the second season, as he was looking to gift Alice a yellow Mini Cooper. It is Sofi's car that he buys in the second season to surprise Alice on her 18th birthday.

But it is also clear from their first interaction that the two share chemistry and have several things in common. Jimmy might finally find love in the current season. Also returning for Shrinking Season 3 is Brett Goldstein's Louis. Series co-creator Bill Lawrence addressed his return in a 2024 Deadline interview:

"Yeah, I gotta leverage that dude. I think the ending was satisfying. I hope it was for people. But I think I’ve been public about saying the first year is about grief, the second year was about forgiveness and third year’s about moving forward. I don’t think you can do this show about moving forward without knowing how that guy’s life moves forward, at least for an episode or two. So now I just got to leverage Brett into doing what I want him to do. He’s a very busy man. It’s very frustrating."

Moreover, Lawrence also teased that forgiveness is the central theme of the third season:

"I feel like it’s more about forgiveness. I think an interesting story to look at is, you see fans go “I don’t like it. I think it’d be weird for you to have to embrace the guy that killed [Tia]. I love all the narrative on our show, because I used to talk about TV that way, and I still do, the TV I like. But it’s based on real stuff, a couple sad stories that are connected to us on the show, and one that you can certainly go and read a thousand versions of: when a kid drinking and driving kills another kid, and the families stay together because you don’t want to lose two lives from it. So I don’t know if it’s as much found family as exploring if it is a little odd for that person still to be around, or if it’s more about we can’t all move forward unless each one of us moves forward."

The first episode of Shrinking Season 3 is streaming on Apple TV.
