IT: Welcome to Derry is not stuck. That is the first thing worth clearing up. The Stephen King prequel did way better than anyone expected, brought in huge numbers, and the TV series still has fans asking the same question every day. If the show was such a hit, why hasn’t HBO renewed it for Season 2 yet?

And HBO chief Casey Bloys himself clears out the doubts regarding the question. In an interview with Deadline, he clarifies:

“Let me say, not in limbo at all. Hardly. It was a huge success for us.”

The delay is not about pulling in massive ratings but rather is about story, timing, and getting the next installment just as right as the first.

Casey Bloys makes it clear that an IT: Welcome to Derry Season 2 renewal is not a ratings or confidence issue

When Deadline asked Casey Bloys why IT: Welcome to Derry still has no Season 2 announcement, Bloys gave a clear-cut answer to the question he was asked. Bloys shut down the idea by saying:

“Let me say, not in limbo at all. Hardly. It was a huge success for us...”

This makes it clear that HBO alone is not the reason Season 2 hasn’t been announced yet. The finale pulled in 6.5 million viewers in just three days, and nearly 20 million people watched the show worldwide, clearly showing that the audience and support were already there.

For HBO, that means the show sits with their biggest and most successful series, like The Last of Us. So, this is not a case of HBO hesitating. Bloys explained that the pause is for creative thinking. He told Deadline that Andy and Barbara Muschietti are:

“Hard at work trying to come up with an idea for a story they’d want to tell for another season.”

He also added:

"I would happily do it."

The real hold-up is the story, not HBO’s interest

The main issue with getting a renewal for seasons 2 and 3 of IT: Welcome to Derry is that there is no book left to follow. Unlike the films, this HBO series is inventing new ground while following King's interlude from the book.

Bloys explained this point clearly to Deadline, saying:

“One of the challenges is, there’s not a book that you’re basing it on, so it’s invention.”

That freedom is exciting, but it also means they do not want to rush. Bloys says Andy and Barbara Muschietti want to move ahead only when they truly feel excited about the story. Bloys said:

“They want to make sure that they have a story they’re excited to tell...So it’s not limbo other than they need to land on something they’re excited by creatively. We’ll be there.”

That lines up with what Andy Muschietti has already previously shared. He has spoken about a three-season plan, with Season 2 potentially moving backward to 1935 while adapting the Bradley Gang massacre.

The Bradley Gang massacre is one of Derry’s darkest moments. The crime spree ends in a deadly shootout where no one survives. It becomes the last big act of violence in Pennywise’s 1935 cycle before IT hibernates again.

The Season 1 finale also hints at why the story moves backward, linking different timelines, families, and generations. At last, it is important to know that HBO is not slowing this down. The creators are making sure the next season fits the larger plan.

The lack of a renewal announcement for IT: Welcome to Derry is nowhere close to being a warning sign. It is a pause that is simply being taken to figure the story out creatively.

Casey Bloys has also said that the show was a huge success and that HBO is ready whenever the story is ready. With the Muschiettis working on the next Season carefully, it is only worth it that we keep our patience game strong.

For fans, this may be frustrating, but it also suggests how HBO wants this universe to grow the right way, not feel rushed in any sort of way.
