Shrinking creator Bill Lawrence has cleared the air on Apple TV's Season 3's final episode, which felt more like a series finale.

The finale showed Jimmy feeling alone after sending Alice off to college. While he was already feeling lonely, he started feeling bad after Sean also moved out. After talking to Paul, he admits to being alone but soon realizes that while he feels alone, it doesn't mean he's not happy in life. Liz and Derek go on a vacation to Spain, while Brian travels to Tennessee to be with his husband. On the other hand, Derrick says yes to Gaby's surprise proposal.

Speaking of the Season 3 ending, which almost felt like a series finale considering all characters get a proper ending, creator Bill Lawrence said in a statement to People:

"It was intentional. This is what I think is cool about streaming shows."

Speaking of the ending, he continued:

"When we pitched this show, we pitched the first three seasons, you know, with a beginning, middle and end to this story. And so, as a writing staff, [co-creators] Jason Segel and Brett Goldstein and I all kind of said, 'Hey, we're gonna write the third season as the end of this three-season story.' Even if the show goes on, you have to do that."

Apple TV announced the renewal of Shrinking Season 4 in January this year ahead of the Season 3 premiere. The new season will follow the same characters, showing their lives after a time jump.

From the beginning of Shrinking, viewers see Jimmy struggling after his wife's death and trying his best to fix his life. Towards the end of Season 3, viewers see a change in his behavior as he starts moving on and even accepting life with its positives and negatives.

The ending has also left viewers curious about what Bill Lawrence will show in Shrinking Season 4. Speaking of Season 3 ending, he said in a statement to People:

"I think there's a hundred more stories to tell. I just think we finished the story of Jimmy getting through the lowest point in his life."

Jessica Williams, who plays Gaby in Shrinking, said that Bill told her the season is about moving ahead in life and finding a new path, adding that she loved her character arc in Shrinking Season 3. She also said that she always felt active and involved in the story, and as someone who loves acting, she felt it was a rewarding experience.

What will Shrinking Season 4 be about?

Season 4 will be set in a later time, telling a whole new story. The creator has confirmed that the cast of Shrinking will remain the same. However, the show will follow a different story to add a fresh layer. This leads to the possibility that the series will show the characters in a different phase of their lives, having new experiences and dealing with situations.

While Shrinking Season 4 does not have a confirmed release date yet, it will most likely arrive next year. The previous seasons were released at different times, with Season 1 arriving in January 2023 and Season 2 arriving in October 2024. The third season arrived this year, in January. The new season could follow a similar window with a possible release in early or late next year.

The season might also introduce new faces along with the new story, adding a fresh feel. As of now, the storyline and complete cast of Season 4 have been kept under wraps.
