K-dramas typically end on a sweet note, but Dear X turned out to be a melodramatic thriller, focusing on the rise and downfall of Baek Ah-jin. Since the series is based on one of the most popular webtoons, it has gained immense popularity.

However, another reason why fans and viewers fell in love with the K-drama is the cast. From My Demon star Kim Yoo-jung and her co-stars, including acclaimed actors Kim Young-dae and Kim Do-hoon, to the True Beauty heartthrob Hwang In-youp making a cameo, it was quite a buzzworthy series.

The story began with revealing how cruel life has been to Ah-jin since childhood. She had to witness her own mother's death and stay silent, and later stage the death of her abusive father.

Though Ah-jin rose to fame as an actress and did many hit projects, she ended up right where she was at the beginning. And while many fans disliked the ending, others enjoyed it. A fan wrote on X:

"It was a satisfying ending for me. Adding deaths are inevitable. It was a dark story from the beginning, and I liked that it stayed that way. A psychological thriller drama where the main character is a sociopath."

Ah-jin's story was undoubtedly dark from the beginning. Though Dear X made some changes in the series, the main idea of Ah-jin's unfortunate life remains the same.

When Dear X's finale came out, social media platforms were flooded with comments and reactions, claiming that the series didn't offer a conclusion fans were expecting. However, not every fan felt the same.

In fact, some webtoon enthusiasts also agreed that the ending was satisfying and that being alone was the greatest punishment for Baek Ah-jin. A tweet reads:

"As someone who have also read the manhwa, I like the ending of the drama better... The drama ending, however, is much more realistic to me... just look at the drama as its own standalone story, Dear X's ending makes perfect sense."

The fan argues that after watching the webtoon, the TV series' ending felt more realistic. There were changes made, and they made perfect sense as Ah-jin didn't get pregnant in the show, and an innocent child was also not used to blackmail other characters.

Another fan shared:

"that's how you wrote an ending tbh... no matter how bittersweet it is for the death of a character, she's the main character and she's the one who deserved to survive until the end. dear x literally gave a wonderfully written woman character and letting her win until the end."

The tweet talks about how perfectly the character of Ah-jin is written. She was the main character and stayed the same until the very end. A tweet reads:

"Im convinced people who don't like the ending of dear x or the drama in general are the typa people that only watch romcoms and were expecting her to live happily with junseo like some of u are acting like she's not a selfish sociopath."

Being a melodramatic thriller, the series was never supposed to have a sweet ending, even in the webtoon. Another fan said:

"The craziest ending. Dear X is my favorite drama this year. The storyline is intense and thrilling. The production and cinematography is top notch. And the Acting is a chef kiss."

As mentioned above, the K-drama made waves for many reasons, and the storyline, cinematography, and cast are among them. Another tweet reads:

"The opening of Episode 1 and the ending of Episode 12 mirror each other perfectly. She’s back where she started, yet won’t give up. Every time she thinks she’s on top, she ends up at the beginning. She is in an endless loop. This is her punishment."

A fan even called it a "masterpiece" and wrote:

"ep 11 of dear x was such an emotional rollercoaster bc the way ajin felt helpless and showed all her emotions ㅡ she made me feels and grieving over jaeo. also the ending always screams cinema. her tears at the end, incredible through and through kim yoojung. what a masterpiece."

Their reactions prove that the K-drama did satisfy many viewers. The story is packed with betrayals, heartbreaks, and above all, a lie that Ah-jin lived for years until she was exposed.

While there was an open end, there's no official update on the renewal of Dear X. If the makers wish to continue, fans can get a chance to look into Ah-jin's life after she's left all alone. Jun-seo and Jae-oh are no longer by her side, and the only hope remaining is Moon Do-hyeok: her obsessive husband.

At the same time, the world believes that Ah-jin is dead. However, the only person who saw her alive was Do-hyeok, which makes the ending even more chilling.
