IT: Welcome to Derry co-creator promises Season 2 won't skip 1930s “depression-era hustling”

We already know that the Muschietti siblings are working on IT: Welcome to Derry Season 2. This week, co-creator Andy Muschietti sat down for an interview with Variety. There, the director of the two IT movies spoke extensively about the upcoming season and even confirmed that the writers’ room is working on the story.

Muschietti teased that fans would meet an entirely new Derry in the second season, as it is set in the 1930s. If you remember, the first season was set in 1962, and IT: Welcome to Derry Season 2 would be set in 1935. The IT filmmaker confirmed that the second season will see the town suffer financially as the world was reeling from the Great Depression. He said:

“There’s gonna be a lot of that depression-era hustling in the air in our characters."

What does Andy Muschietti's IT: Welcome to Derry Season 2 tease mean?

The first season was set in the 1960s, a time in which Derry is a relatively quaint suburb in Maine. However, the second season will see Derry in the depression era. Andy Muschietti hinted that the residents of Maine are struggling to survive, and poverty is widespread in the town.

As people are struggling to find employment and dealing with homelessness, Muschietti teased that IT: Welcome to Derry Season 2 will feature a completely different Derry than Season 1. His exact words were:

“In this case, on the surface, Derry is a graveyard almost. It’s a carcass of something because people are depleted, poor, tired, jobless, homeless. The kids don’t have a suburban, comforting life. They’re in a very different situation. Some of them are orphans or runaways, and so the environment is pretty bleak. But there’s always the aspect of hope that is always there, burning, and it’s what keeps our new group going.”

Pennywise would add to Derry's woes in addition to the Great Depression in season 2. We already know that the upcoming season will depict the Bradley Gang Massacre, something that was teased even in the opening credits of Welcome to Derry. For the uninitiated, the first season revealed the massacre that took place in 1935. We even see an old car filled with bodies in the second episode of season 1.

We will get context for this moment in the upcoming season. We also see a glimpse of the massacre in the opening credits of Welcome to Derry.

Why is the second season taking place in the 1930s?

The Muschiettis were clear from the beginning of IT: Welcome to Derry that each season of the series would be set 27 years apart from each other. The only difference being that instead of jumping forward, the series would jump 27 years back in time.

The closing minutes of the season 1 finale set the stage for season 2, as Marge explains to Lilly that Pennywise may be attempting to kill the yet-to-be-born Losers Club by targeting their ancestors. Thus, we can expect more tie-ins to the original IT characters in Welcome to Derry Season 2.
