The latest episode of Abbott Elementary Season 6, Halloween Party not only features a literal Halloween party thrown by Ava, but also Gregory planning to propose to Janine. Throughout the episode, Gregory does his best to keep it a secret, but Janine begins to suspect Gregory is cheating after she tracks his location and sees he hasn't moved from a strip mall for quite some time. While the drama around Gregory's whereabouts gets cleared up by the end of the episode, Janine accidentally finds out about the proposal. I think Janine deserves a better proposal than Abbott Elementary gives her in Season 6 as it would be so much better if it came as a surprise. Why Janine should have been surprised by Gregory's proposal in Abbott ElementaryAbbott Elementary is a sitcom and a successful one at that. Thus, it is a given that the show needs to add some amount of humor to all plotlines, even the heavy and slightly serious ones. However, I think Gregory's (played by Tyler James Williams) proposal to Janine (played by Quinta Brunson) could have been better if it was dealt with a little less humor and more depth. The only person he tells about this is O'Shon (played by Matthew Law). Gregory spends the entire day successfully keeping his plans a secret from Janine, but what he doesn't know is that Janine was tracking his location from her phone when he went to the jewelry store in the strip mall to purchase the ring.At the jewelry store, Gregory is helped by a highly energetic and unhelpful jewelry store saleswoman/associate (played by Edi Patterson). He ends up spending more time at the jewelry store than intended due to the associate's unintentional rambling. When Janine calls him to ask why he's at the same location for hours, he lies and says that he's finishing up his last delivery. However, in the background of the call, the associate rambles on about rings, which end up sounding extremely sexual, leading to Janine thinking Gregory is cheating on her with another woman. After finally making it to Ava's (played by Janelle James) Halloween party, Gregory clears up that he wasn't cheating, and asks Janine to trust him and stay patient. Janine agrees, but she does so thinking that Gregory is planning to surprise her with a puppy. As she is dancing happily afterwards, Ava guesses that it's because she knows Gregory is proposing, thus unintentionally spoiling the surprise. Janine does look happy, but given how much Gregory and Janine have gone through, the proposal could have been handled a tad bit better. For the first 3 seasons of Abbott Elementary, Janine and Gregory shared a sweet friendship along with a "will-they, won't-they" dynamic. They finally started dating in Season 4, crossed multiple relationship hurdles, broke up in Season 5 episode 19, and got back together two episodes later. Gregory planned a proposal and did his best to keep it all a secret, not revealing it even when Janine and Jacob (played by Chris Perfetti) suspected him of cheating. But then Janine finds out about it accidentally. If Abbott Elementary had instead chosen to not let Janine find out, Gregory would have succeeded in carrying out the surprise as planned. Moreover, she would have been absolutely shocked, surprised, and ecstatic when Gregory proposed, emotions that she deserves to feel.It goes without saying that Janine will still be thrilled when Gregory proposes to her despite already knowing it's coming. However, it would perhaps be a sweeter experience for them both if Gregory succeeded in his plan of keeping it a surprise and Janine was swept off her feet when it happened. All released Abbott Elementary episodes are streaming on Hulu. For more articles like this, follow Soapcentral.
