Lanterns almost looked completely different before James Gunn and DC changed everything

Only a few days are left before the viewers get a new version of Green Lantern in Lanterns, which is set to release on August 16. With the very talented Kyle Chandler taking on the role of Hal Jordan, while Aaron Pierce brings life to John Stewart, viewers have been eagerly waiting for the series.

The storyline dives into the complex and mysterious cases that two cops take on. However, in a recent report, it is revealed that the storyline of Lanterns, which has an essence of True Detective, almost looked completely different.

Lanterns could have headed in a completely different direction

In a recent report by The Ankler, details about how Lanterns almost looked completely different are unveiled. It is reported that Greg Berlanti, who had been working on this project since 2019, had a different storyline in mind.

Instead of the buddy-cop tone of the upcoming series, which has a familiarity with True Detective, the focus was on a “redemption story” because of the negative reaction that the first movie with Ryan Reynolds received.

However, even when Greg Berlanti, along with Seth Grahame-Smith and Marc Guggenheim, created eight scripts for the series, they kept on receiving notes to change the storyline. In the report by The Ankler, it is revealed that Marc Guggenheim received continuous “notes” where they were told to give a storyline with the essence of “True Detective with power rings”.

However, even though they were given notes about the storyline, they were not “interested”. James Gunn and DC have now taken on Lanterns, and the storyline has the “True Detective” essence that the HBO Max executives initially wanted the series to have. Though the present storyline of Lanterns is interesting, the missed opportunity of getting a completely different storyline also adds to the intrigue.

In a previous interview with Men’s Health, Chris Mundy, who takes on the helm of the series as the showrunner, unveiled that it is both a “buddy cop show” and a “superhero show”.

There will be a blend of both elements in the storyline. Aaron Pierre, who takes on the role of John Stewart in the upcoming series, also added in an interview with GQ that the storylines of the characters are “very relatable,” which is one of his “favorite things” about being a Green Lantern.

Besides Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre, some of the other cast members of the series are Ulrich Thomsen, who will take on the role of the villainous Sinestro, Nathan Fillion, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Laura Linney, etc.

The storyline of this upcoming series has its connection to the DCU but in a broader manner, which James Gunn has also confirmed, especially considering the involvement of Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner. James Hawes takes the helm as the director of the series. The trailer for the series perfectly delivers the depth and intensity of the mystery, which will slowly be unraveled as the series progresses.

The trailer also gives the viewers snippets of the intense action sequences that will be present in the series. Viewers can tune in to HBO Max to watch the series. After the first episode releases on August 16, the following episodes will release in a weekly manner, with the finale set to release on October 4. There will be eight episodes in the first season of the series.
