As the Lanterns finale revealed, Thaal Sinestro made a new lantern for Noah Macon because he wanted protection from the Guardians of the Universe. That is the same lantern we later saw John use to charge his ring as he said his new oath.Sinestro had forged the ring using the fear energy of the dead planet the Manhunters had destroyed. Thus, the lantern has cracks and has yellow streaks in those cracks. While many thought that would make John a yellow lantern, it might have led him on a darker path.Lanterns' John Stewart might become something unexpected because of his new lanternJohn Stewart was raised fearless so that he could become a Green Lantern one day. However, as the events of the show made him realize, embracing one's fear can also generate immense power. Thus, at the end, when John accepted his ring, he changed the Green Lanterns' oath in which he said that he embraces his fear.John charged his ring using the lantern Sinestro made, and it has yellow streaks since it was made using the dead planet's toxic atmosphere, which is contaminated with fear-inducing gas. While initially the lantern looked like the beginning of the Yellow Lanterns, concept artist Ed Natividad has revealed something else. After the Lanterns finale aired, Ed Natividad, who worked as a concept artist for the show, posted images of concept art of the lantern created by Sinestro. He posted the images with the caption:"Forged by Sinestro and designed to be distinctively different from Hal's Lantern. It will now be used by John Stewart. Thank you sooo much GL community for your support. 🙏..."In the images, the lantern is titled as "Dark Lantern," not Yellow Lantern. That suggests that it might lead to something dark for John. However, we don't yet know exactly what that might be. View this post on Instagram Instagram PostThe Dark Lantern has yellow streaks running through it, filling up cracks. While one can tell that John will be a different kind of Green Lantern than Hal, the fact that his lantern is called Dark Lantern will most likely shape his character if Lanterns gets a Season 2.John’s journey in the show has already established that courage is not about eliminating fear. However, repeatedly relying on a fear-infused battery could have dangerous consequences. The longer John uses it, the more closely his powers could become connected to fear, potentially changing how his ring and powers work.According to a theory by ComicBook, the Dark Lantern could eventually lead to Parallax. Parallax was originally created by writer Ron Marz and artist Darryl Banks in 1994 as a new villainous identity for Hal Jordan after the destruction of Coast City drove him into madness.Years later, writer Geoff Johns and artist Ethan Van Sciver reimagined Parallax as an ancient entity representing the emotion of fear, which had possessed and corrupted Jordan. Rather than simply turning John into a villain, Lanterns might explore if he can continue to control fear without allowing it to influence him. Thus, if Season 2 of the show is made, the Dark Lantern may ultimately prove to be more than just an alternative power source. It could be the first sign that John’s unique connection to fear will eventually create a threat he cannot easily control.Lanterns is streaming on HBO Max.For more articles like this, follow Soapcentral.
