Lanterns Episode 4 reveals the shocking identity of the Manhunter - recap ahead

Lanterns Episode 4 aired on HBO on September 6. The latest episode of the platform's superhero series finally revealed the identity of the Manhunter. The second episode revealed that the DCU series is expanding on the comic book lore of Manhunters, advanced synthetic beings created by the Guardians of the Universe. According to the comics, Manhunters eventually went rogue and rebelled against the Guardians. After the destruction of their race, a lone Manhunter survivor was captured by Lantern Abin Sur. However, the Manhunter crashed on Earth and hid in Rushville, wreaking havoc for Hal and John in 2016.

Lanterns Episode 4 also featured an intense meeting between Hal and Sinestro and the latter advised him to kill his replacement, John. However, Hal dismissed the idea, saying that he was not evil. Hal left Sinestro after learning an important anatomical truth about the shapeshifting Manhunters: they cannot mimic a human heart.

Lanterns Episode 4 recap: John and Hal were captured by Will Macon's men

Lanterns Episode 4 revealed that John and Hal had been staking out Will's compound and were convinced that the Manhunter was Will's benefactor. Back at the motel, Laura visited John and revealed the details of Hal's visit to Sinestro. She also provoked him to up his game by revealing that Hal's reports about him called him weak and uncreative, after which John called him old. However, this prompted John to devise a strategy for breaking into Will's compound by tunneling in.

The duo arrived on Macon's property and Hal gave John his ring to manifest a giant drill for the tunnel. Upon entering the compound, the men saw a room full of super high-tech weapons. But Hal accidentally set off a pressure alarm while asking for his ring back. The alarm naturally alerted Will's men, who ambushed the space with black smoke, rendering Hal's ring powerless and allowing Will's men to capture them.

When Hal questioned Will about the machinery in Lanterns Episode 4, Will stated that it was none of his business. However, Will did spill some details about the mystery guy, including how he cured his cancer (which led to his first meeting with Zoe) and that the town was thriving under his magical protection. The scene took a harrowing turn when Will threatened to kill John but Kerry showed up at the right moment and arrested the duo for trespassing, thus saving them from Will's clutches.

Lanterns Episode 4 recap: A shocking tragedy

John got a surprising visit from Zoe at his motel in Lanterns Episode 4. The visit turned into an intimate moment for them. When Zoe advised John to leave the town, he refused. Moments after pulling away from the motel, Zoe's car was blown into pieces by a red laser beam from a satellite above. Hal arrived at the scene and retrieved the satellite, which belonged to a company owned by Hector Hammond. In the meantime, Hal offered condolences to John for Zoe's death but he seemed unaffected.

Lanterns Episode 4 took a turn when Hector threatened to blow up John's parents' house, which worked him up. When Hector claimed to be the Manhunter, Hal used the intel from Sinestro to expose Hector's lies. Hector finally admitted that Will Macon is the real Manhunter.

In the final moments of Lanterns Episode 4, Hal asked John to call Antaan's hit squad at the cafe to expose the Manhunter's identity. However, Hal revealed that he is onto John and knows who the real Manhunter is. Hal stated that while he was suspicious of John after his reaction to Zoe's death, his doubts were cleared when John lost his temper at Hector's claims. Hal revealed that John was not upset about Zoe's death because he knew that she was not dead, as she is the Manhunter.

"You aren't upset because you know Zoe isn't dead. And I don't know how she managed to get out of that, unless she's a Manhunter. The thing that I can't figure out is, how long you've known."

Turns out Hal's claims were right in Lanterns Episode 4 as John confessed to having 'a feeling' that Zoe was the Manhunter. The episode concluded with Hal crashing the rental car with John inside, suggesting that he would set out to hunt down Zoe without the younger Lantern.
