Lanterns Episode 5 sees John make a shocking decision about his future- recap ahead

Lanterns Episode 5 titled 'Lights Out' aired on HBO on September 13. The latest episode of the platform's superhero series saw Hal's search for the Manhunter come to a shocking end. Elsewhere, John decided that he had had enough and made a shocking decision for his future: to walk away from the Ring.

Before the destructive streak in the latest episode, Lanterns Episode 5 opened with a flashback to 2007. Some men were harassing Kerry in a diner, ready to kill her because of her father's sins, when Zoe showed up at the right moment. Zoe turned her attention to Kerry and promised her a secure and simple life, only if she promised to protect her and return the favour. While Kerry had many follow-up questions, she agreed to the bargain.

In the present, Hal left a dying John in the car after the vehicle caught fire and Zoe watched the scene from afar.

Lanterns Episode 5 recap: Zoe heals John

Lanterns Episode 5 returns to the present, where Hal confronted Kerry for hiding a Manhunter. While Kerry did not reveal the details of her deal with Zoe, she says she owes her and that the Manhunter gave her a miracle. When Kerry begged Hal to leave, as Zoe would destroy the whole town to get to him, Hal was naturally upset and walked away, saying everything that happens now is on her.

The episode then shifted to a badly burned John, who was completely wrapped in bandages at the hospital. Zoe was by his side and offered to heal him, only if he promised to kill Hal in return. Zoe said John needed to kill Hal and get the ring from him, which was rightfully his. She then put a drop of her blood in John's eye and placed his burned body in a scanner. Voila! John's skin began regrowing and the Manhunter magic worked. Just when John was completely healed, Zoe revealed that she was drawn to him because he 'saw' her. However, she left the hospital abruptly after Will tipped her off about Antaan and his men.

Lanterns Episode 5 recap: John kills Zoe after a brutal fight with Hal

Hal's plan worked in Lanterns Episode 5 as Antaan arrived at Will's mansion, ready to kill the Manhunter. But before that, he quizzed Will on stuff only a Manhunter would know. While Will tried to keep up the charade, thanks to the alien language Zoe taught him, it did not convince Antaan. Will eventually failed Antaan's test but he stabbed him anyway, sneering, 'Human,' when he took out his heart.

Lanterns Episode 5 took a turn for the worse as Rushville was under attack. Red beams shot from the sky, destroying buildings and everyone. While Hal tried to protect everyone with his green-blasted energy, it was not enough. Elsewhere, John grabbed a gun at the hospital and left for the motel. He reunited with Hal, who was in dire need of recharging his ring. The two men fought until the red beam reached the motel. But Hal used his almost-depleted ring to protect their room from the laser.

While John managed to escape the demolished building, Hal lay in the ruins when Zoe showed up at the motel. When Zoe asked about John, Hal said John had promoted himself. To this, Zoe boasted that John traded his life for Hal's and pointed a gun at him. However, Hal maintained that John would have killed him if he wanted to, which was Zoe's cue to turn, only to find John standing there with a rifle. Zoe gave a fading smile to John, right before he fatally shot her and shed a tear or two in the process.

Lanterns Episode 5 saw John slicing Zoe's heart out of her body, which crystallized, as Sinestro had said to Hal.

After killing the Manhunter, John removed the ring from Hal's finger and put it on. Hal, barely conscious, asked John if it was worth it and warned his junior that they would replace him too.

The final moments of Lanterns Episode 5 saw John meeting up with Lianna in a bar to deliver Zoe's heart. Lianna was proud that John had undone a major mistake but he was not happy even after wearing the ring.

In a shocking move, he removed the ring, placed it on the table and walked away, saying that despite years of training and discipline, wearing the ring felt empty. He added:
