This week's Lanterns episode sets up an intriguing mystery that we will see play out throughout the rest of the season: the identity of a Manhunter hiding in Rushville. We also learn more about "Waylon Sanders" (the sui*ide bomber) from the last act of last week's episode, and his dead comrades. It also introduces Paul Ben-Victor's Antaan, a character many fans believe that is using a fake name.The 51-minute episode was entirely set in 2016, with no flash-forward to the aftermath of Kerry Kane and John Stewart's discovery of Hal Jordan's body in 2026. Jordan informs his replacement/pupil that he is training the latter to fly. But John accidentally creates a bird using the Green Lantern ring instead of flying. Meanwhile, they learn that the ring is running on low battery, and thus Hal asks John to take a flight to Coast City to Jordan's home and bring the lantern to recharge the weapon. First, he walks into the town hall meeting, where he has a tense exchange with Sheriff Kerry. But this exchange is cut short as Hal receives John's call, where he walks his pupil through the mansion to get the lantern that recharges the ring.John ultimately finds the lantern inside a pocket dimension and feeds a sentient plant like his mentor instructed. But John is abducted by some unidentified assailants. John escapes their captivity, leading to a thrilling highway chase, but he is subdued and brought to Antaan (Paul Ben-Victor). Antaan reveals that Waylon and his dead comrades from the first Lanterns episode were a part of his team.Meanwhile, Jordan breaks into a morgue and takes out the bodies of the other dead aliens and drives them to the stadium. He does so because he realizes the stadium metal detector doesn't beep when he carries metal. But it does beep when Jordan carries one of the alien's bodies through the detector, meaning William Macon (Garret Dillahunt) had installed an alien detector throughout the stadium.The scene returns to John in Antaan's captivity, and the latter reveals that he intends to recruit the former. He goes on to reveal that Waylon and his team were in Rushville to identify the Manhunter who has been hiding in the town for thirty years. We also learn that Abin Sur was probably killed by the Manhunter, leading to his ring choosing Hal Jordan in 1986.Antaan gives John 48 hours to identify the Manhunter, or he will send more of his team to blow up Rushville like Waylon. As John and his bird are sent back, the scene cuts to Hal being apprehended by Kerry. The Lantern legend convinces the sheriff to take him to Will Macon. But the meeting at the Macon Ranch doesn't go well, and the senior Macon threatens to have one of his men shoot Hal.Hal doesn't back down, and he is shot through his arm, and Kerry takes him to the hospital for recovery. Upon waking up, Hal learns that he has been apprehended in the hospital bed inside the Rushville police HQ, handcuffed to the bed. Hal apologizes for his conduct at the ranch but doesn't open up about what happened between him and Sinestro, his mentor.Even though it is common knowledge that Hal was the one who apprehended Sinestro, he doesn't open up to Kerry about what he feels about those events. But it seems that the two have buried the hatchet, and as the two are walking through the HQ, Kerry reveals that she is from Gotham.This revelation has many believe that Kerry was speaking with Jim Gordon over the phone in last week's Lanterns episode, as she name-dropped "Barb", the shorthand for Barbara Gordon. Meanwhile, John makes his way back to Rushville and enters a cafe for a cup of coffee. There, he encounters Zoe Macon. After a brief conversation, she drives him to Hal's motel.John hands over the Green Lantern to Hal, who instantly recharges the ring. The experienced Lantern also chides his pupil for packing the suit. But this conversation turns to the Manhunters, and John informs Hal that one of the town's folk has shape-shifted into a human and is living in Rushville. It should be noted that the "Manhunters" Lanterns are talking about, are not Martian Manhunters.Instead, the Manhunters discussed here are the androids that the Guardians of Oa created before the Green Lanterns. The Manhunters went rogue and carried out a genocide under the name of justice, including that of Antaan's species. Thus, the Guardians disbanned the Manhunters and created the Green Lantern Corps, who don't have a narrow definition of justice.Upon hearing the name of "Manhunters", Hal heads to his room, and unbeknownst to John, he suits up in the Lantern uniform and flies off to the planet where Sinestro is imprisoned. Hal enters his former mentor's prison cell and asks Sinestro about the Manhunters. To this, Sinestro informs his former pupil that the Manhunter would be the second-biggest threat Hal would be facing.Then, Sinestro asks Hal to tell him something about John Stewart, implying that the new Lantern recruit might be Jordan's biggest threat. The Lanterns episode ends right after that, setting up the opening of next week's episode in the prison cell between Hal and his former mentor.The second Lanterns episode is currently accessible via streaming on HBO Max.
