Lanterns logo revealed: Here's why the lack of the color green might not be a missed opportunity

HBO released the official logo for Lanterns two days ago, which has the name of the series in gray with a small hint of green at the bottom. The logo was warmly recieved but some were disappointed that green isn't that prominent in the logo. However, the internet has an interesting theory regarding the lack of the color green on the logo.

Second attempt at the live-action adaptation of the Green Lantern comics, the HBO show promises a grittier interpretation of the iconic DC Comics characters. As of now, DC has kept details about the series under wraps, except that Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre will headline the HBO series as Hal Jordan and John Stewart. The official logline for Lanterns reveals that:

“The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”

The lack of the color green in the Lanterns' logo explained:

If you look at the official logo for the HBO series, you will notice a very slight hue of green on the bottom of the name. The lack of the word "green" in the title suggests that the series might be a bit grittier than the maligned 2011 movie. However, some believe that the logo seen above is from the Lanterns' premiere only. They suggest that green will become more and more green with each passing episode. This theory also suggests that this feature stands in line with the Green Lantern oath:

“In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight. Let those who worship evil’s might beware my power…Green Lantern’s light!”

But the most hyped element of Lanterns is the presence of John Stewart, a fan-favorite Green Lantern. While Alan Scott was the first human Green Lantern, Hal Jordan is the most well-known Lantern. But that changed in the 90s, as the animated Justice League series swapped Hal Jordan for John Stewart (a character introduced in 1972).

Therefore, the current generation that grew up watching the Justice League series considers Stewart as Green Lantern. Pierre was a fan-favorite for John Stewart because of the actor's physical resemblance to the character in the animated series.

Has the series finished filming?

The HBO series wrapped up production in the second half of last year. Aaron Pierre confirmed that the HBO show concluded filming in an October 2025 Esquire interview. While discussing the upcoming DCU series, Pierre revealed that the live-action Green Lantern show wrapped up filming:

“We recently wrapped Lanterns. It was an enormous shoot. It was of a grand scale in every sense of the word. And again, I’ve just been so fortunate. When I have interviews like this, it encourages me to reflect. I’ve been so fortunate to be surrounded by extraordinary collaborators and directors and crew and cast and just people who care. People who are fundamentally grateful. People who want to put the best work out that they physically can. We’re all very proud of this and very excited. It’s been a long time coming for many fans and supporters. And I truly hope with all my heart that we make everybody proud and we make everybody thrilled that we did this, because we’re thrilled and we’re proud.”

The show is set to be released this Summer. Initially scheduled for the first half of this year, HBO confirmed the delay last year. Peter Safran addressed this delay in a CBR interview:

"It was about when it made sense for it to be released, so (HBO Max) could get the right lead in, the right promotion. Because it's an important show for everybody, and the show is going to be great. It was about the right timing, so it's going to be… it's late summer. But there's a reason for it."
