Lanterns makes HBO Max history with a massive debut that puts DC’s latest hit among its biggest launches

Lanterns has created history with its first episode. It cannot be denied that the series has been one of the most anticipated HBO Max shows. Right after the announcement of the series, there has been a distinct anticipation that has kept on rising.

Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler helm the lead roles in the series and bring forth an impeccable dynamic. Both the storyline along with the cast members have delivered a remarkable performance and made Lanterns the biggest premiere for a show from DC Studios.

Lanterns gets 9.3 million views within three days

The first episode of the series, which dropped on August 16, has already gained 9.3 million views within the first three days of its release. The first episode of the series dives into several timelines, showing the growth of the characters. From depicting John Stewart’s childhood to his path of becoming a trainee under Hal Jordan, the first episode sets the stage with the perfect background for world-building.

It is also reported that the series achieved 6.6 million views just in the U.S. within the first three days of its release. It is rare to see TV shows achieve such immense success right away. If a comparison is made with the viewership of some of the most successful shows on the streaming platform, then it can be understood how significant this massive debut for the DC show is.

The storyline of the series sheds light on John Stewart and Hal Jordan’s journey in solving “earth-based” mysteries. With a blend of the intensity of a police procedural and the dramatic twists and turns in the storyline, Lanterns gets the viewers hooked from the first go. Besides Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler, some of the other cast members of this HBO Max series are Kelly Macdonald, Poorna Jagannathan, Jason Ritter, Nathan Fillion, etc.

Short recap of Lanterns Episode 1

In the first episode of the series, the storyline provides three timelines. The first timeline is 1996, when a young John Stewart gets inspired by Hal Jordan while watching television. From an early age, he has been trained to take on the helm of Green Lantern.

In 2016, John and Hal have already met, and Hal trains John to take the mantle of Green Lantern from him. However, he is not eager to do it and often ignores his duties as a trainer. During this period, the two of them come across a complication in Nebraska. While investigating the case, Hal thinks that there is involvement of aliens; however, the sheriff does not think so.

At the end of the episode, Hal’s words are revealed to be the truth as the human-looking alien whom they had captured blasts himself so that Hal is not able to question him further. In this episode, the details of how Hal was chosen as Green Lantern are also revealed. However, things take a turn when a new timeline, 2026, is shown.

In this timeline, John returns to Nebraska and comes across a shocking turn of events. He finds Hal’s dead body. This eventually sets the stage for an intense journey in the upcoming episodes. It cannot be denied that, besides the action sequences and the tense atmosphere, the dynamic that Aaron Pierre’s John shares with Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan is the heart of the show. The next episode of the series is set to release on August 23 at 9 PM ET.
