DCU returns to HBO after last year's Peacemaker Season 2 with Lanterns this week. This is the first time since the 2011 movie that the Green Lantern characters are returning to a live-action adaptation. This time Hal Jordan is joined by fan-favorite DC character John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre. The trailers have hinted that the series will be a murder-mystery with an alien twist.

James Gunn pointed to HBO's iconic crime series True Detective as an influence for the DCU superhero series. We can see the influence of True Detective in all the Lanterns trailers. However, we will learn more about the DCU series in a few hours as the superhero show drops on HBO this week.

What do we know about the HBO series?

The reviews for the show have been nothing but positive, which is why fans are hyped to see the DCU series. Positive word of mouth for the series has Green Lantern fans especially happy because it seems that DC finally got the Lantern Corps right after the previous infamous attempt.

The first five minutes that HBO released this week set up a dark tone for our characters, who have to deal with personal issues. Fans were particularly shocked to see John Stewart's past as the son of an army officer. It also establishes Stewart as a fan of Hal Jordan.

It will be interesting to see Stewart's relationship evolve with the man whom he looked up to as a role model since he was a boy.

The murder-mystery that the two Green Lantern recruits encounter would either bring the mentor and mentee together or push them apart. The official logline of the show reads:
