Lanterns subtly snuck in a major Batman character

Lanterns' first episode name dropped someone named "Barb". This occurred halfway through the premiere as Sheriff Kerry Kane is speaking with someone over the phone, and she asks the voice on the other end to give "Barb" her regards. This had many theorists think that Kerry was referring to Barbara Gordon, the name associated one of Batman's strongest allies, Jim Gordon.

It should be noted that Barbara is the name of Jim Gordon's wife, and the couple's daughter is also named Barbara, who goes on to become Batgirl. Moreover, Kerry reveals that she isn't raised in Rushville in this week's Lanterns episode.

Lanterns Episode 2 reveals that Kerry is from Gotham:

Kerry and Hal Jordan bury their differences in this week's episode, as she rushes him to the Rushville police HQ's hospital after Will Macon shoots him at the ranch. As he is discharged from the hospital, Hal asks Kerry where she is from, to which the sheriff reveals that she was raised in Gotham. We have seen the DCU Gotham only once until now: Creature Commandos.

While there was a Gotham Easter egg in last year's Superman, it wasn't until this week that Gotham was brought up in the DCU. This revelation gives more context to the last episode's name drop of "Barb". Kerry was probably speaking with Jim Gordon over the phone, making it his DCU debut. But that is not the only Batman connection.

Sheriff Kerry's surname is "Kane". For the uninitated, Bruce Wayne's mother Martha hails from the Kane family in the comics. Matt Reeves's The Batman and the Batman: Earth One comics change Martha's family to Arkhams, but usually, she hails from the Kane family. Batwoman/Kate Kane is also Bruce's maternal cousin. The DCU might have another Kane through Lanterns' Sheriff Kerry.

Why does this reference to the DCU Gotham matter?

The DCU Batman project, The Brave and the Bold, has been languishing in development hell for a long time. Early this year, it was revealed that The Brave and the Bold would be written by Christina Hodson, but since then, there hasn't been any movement on this long-awaited project. But this revelation in the Green Lantern show gives fans hope that the DCU is slowly building towards this continuity's Batman.

It should be noted that the DC Universe version of The Dark Knight remains uncast. In addition to the role remaining uncast, The Brave and the Bold script is not even complete yet. This slow pace has a lot of fans frustrated, as James Gunn had promised that Robin would be the second lead of the DCU Batman movie. If the script for The Brave and the Bold is finished in a month or two, it would line up with Clayface's release.

The body horror movie headlined by the Batman villain is set in the DCU. This version of Clayface was the same one we saw in Creature Commandos Season 1. Thus, Clayface, which releases this October, is a prequel to the animated DCU series. Many are hoping that the movie includes references to the DCU Batman as well. But that hasn't been confirmed yet.

But the Gotham name drop in this week's Lanterns episode and the upcoming Clayface suggest that the DCU Batman is around the corner.
