HBO is ramping up the promotional campaign for the Lanterns finale, which airs this coming Sunday. The network released an official clip from the upcoming finale, focusing on Sheriff Kerry Kane and Hal Jordan. In this clip, we see the two eating in a Rushville restaurant, as Kerry publicly declares that she likes Hal Jordan. This clip is set in 2026, a decade after the Rushville massacre.

This scene only adds to the theory that this love story is doomed. Not because Kerry and Hal fell out of love over time, but because she would be forced to do the unthinkable: Deliver the killing blow on Hal. As of now, we don't know who killed Hal in Lanterns, or if he is indeed dead, but a common theory is that Kerry and Billy Macon's son, Noah, might be a Manhunter, just like his grandmother Zoe.

The latest Lanterns finale clip lays the foundation for Hal and Kerry's relationship:

The one-minute nineteen-second clip starts with Kerry Kane publicly asking for attention from other customers of the restaurant. She begins her speech with how the residents of Rushville continue to mistreat Hal, who is trying to right the wrongs of the 2016 massacre. Then, she goes on to declare that she likes Hal, setting the foundation of their romance. The clip ends there.

While their relationship could be genuine, some believe that there is more to Hal Jordan trying to "right the wrongs". The massacre is not really Hal's fault, and he was unfairly blamed for it. Zoe was mostly responsible for tearing apart Rushville to save herself. But the townsfolk were devoted to their Manhunter benefactor and were brainwashed enough to blame Hal and John.

Fans believe that Rushville is housing another Manhunter. Thus, Hal continued investigating their identity, and he did so by offering Rushville residents help. Hal soon discovers that Kerry's son Noah is part Manhunter, which puts a strain on his and Kerry's relationship.

Fans think that Kerry might have shot Hal:

Some fans have come up with a possible timeline about the events that may have led to Hal's murder in Lanterns. This theoretical timeline was formulated based on two moments from the episode 8 preview: Hal Jordan's house being firebombed and his unconscious body on the floor. In the second season scene, we see a mark on Hal's arm, the same one we saw on John's arm in the fifth episode.

If this timeline is to be believed, Hal's house is firebombed, in which he is burnt. Then, Noah and his group could take Hal Jordan to heal him inside the same machine that Zoe healed John. Noah expects Hal to let it go, but the Lantern legend can't do exactly that. He intends to publicly expose Noah as part-Manhunter. But Kerry wants to protect her son.

Thus, Kerry drew out Hal to the football field, where she ultimately kills him when he is determined to out Noah as a Manhunter. After shooting Hal, Kerry could regretfully place her hands on the departed legendary Green Lantern's shoulders. We see a hand reaching to dead Hal's shoulders in the Lanterns Episode 8 preview at the 22-second mark.

This hand could belong to Kerry, suggesting a tragic end to their relationship.

Will the finale reveal who killed Hal Jordan?

The finale will reveal who killed Hal Jordan. The first episode wouldn't have added that hook without revealing who killed Hal. Co-creator Damon Lindelof had confirmed that the finale will resolve all the dangling plot threads without explicitly mentioning Hal Jordan's name. He did so while referring to showrunner Chris Mundy's condition to join the HBO series:

“He said, ‘I want to tell a complete story. We’re going to do a mystery, and then, more importantly, we’re going to have a relationship story between these two guys that feels resolved at the end of the story that we’re telling."
