Lioness Season 3 ending reveals Joe’s abduction was connected to series premiere- Finale recap

Paramount+'s spy thriller Lioness Season 3 finale episode dropped on September 20, 2026. The ending confirms that Joe's kidnapping was not politically motivated but funded by someone she and her team humiliated years ago.

According to DMT, the mastermind was none other than Aaliyah, whose father, Asmar Ali Amrohi, was killed by Joe's Lioness Cruz Manuelos in Lioness Season 1. Cruz had not only killed Aaliyah's father but her fiancé, Ehsan, as well. Aaliyah kidnapped Joe to avenge her loved ones' deaths. However, this was clearly not the first time she attempted to kidnap Joe. She wanted to keep Joe alive because she wanted her team to come looking for her, so that Aaliyah could avenge her father's death.

Here's what happened in the Lioness Season 3 finale.

Lioness Season 3 ending explained: Aaliyah paid KSS to kidnap Joe

Lioness Season 1 revealed that Ali Amrohi was an oil magnate, and upon his death, Aaliyah inherited the wealth. Aaliyah used her father's resources to locate Cruz and found out that she was a CIA operative (Lioness) who was working on a team led by Joe McNamara. In the Lioness Season 3 finale, Alex, a Belarusian contract, informed Joe and Kaitlyn that it was KSS of Kata'ib Sayyid ul-Shuhada, an independent terrorist organization that put a hit out to abduct CIA officer Joe McNamara and bring her out of the country alive.

Now, whether Iran was involved in the plan remains a mystery. In Lioness Season 2, Joe had spoiled their nuclear program, and thus, she became their prime target.

Lioness Season 3 finale recap: Tex and Two Cups are shot

Titled The Unraveling, the finale begins with Joe physically free but mentally unable to leave the past behind. Her rescue in the previous episode has left several questions unanswered. Her anger led the CIA to conduct an aggressive cleanup operation. By the end, one suspected conspirator was dead, and several agents were wounded, but the real mastermind behind the attack was still free.

The first major operation began when the team suspected unusual activity surrounding Dmitri Sokolov. Kyle, Tex, and Two Cups followed him, and it led them to a bistro where Dmitri met a man. Joe immediately recognized Dmitri as someone connected to her kidnapping.

Dmitri realized he had been compromised, and he killed the man he was meeting. This triggered a massive firefight. Dmitri and several guards were killed. Tex and Two Cups were shot, leaving them severely wounded.

Lioness Season 3 finale: Oleksandra is executed

Elsewhere, Meade and Westfield believe Oleksandra Balakin might have manipulated the CIA into arresting Alexis Yurimov, so that they could blame Russia for Joe's kidnapping. Thus, putting the United States and Russia on bad terms. Oleksandra was executed even though the CIA had no evidence that she was part of the operation.

Who abducted Joe?

According to FilmiFeed, Meade and Westfield decide to send Yurimov back to Russia to clear up the mess that they have created. Yurimov's capture in Ukraine triggered events that led to Joe's kidnapping.

However, his detention had also damaged Russia's relations with the US. The CIA could not gain any pivotal intelligence from him. Joe, along with her team, reached Guantanamo Bay to retrieve Yurimov. Another detainee, Alex, calls Joe by her name and tells her that her profile was circulated through contractor networks before the kidnapping.

Alex reveals he was offered the job himself, but he rejected it because it was a life-risk operation. The finale shuts down the Oleska/Ukraine theory. Alex further explains how contractors were recruited to capture Joe and send her to KSS, an Iran-backed paramilitary organisation. Even though Russian and Belarusian contractors played a pivotal role, the mastermind was not them.

The conspiracy plot shifts to Doha, Qatar, where we meet a mysterious woman, and it turns out she is the one funding Joe's abduction. According to DMT, it was none other than Aaliyah, who wanted to avenge the death of her father, who was killed by Cruz. She wanted to use Joe as bait so that the Lioness team would come to rescue the senior CIA officer.

In the finale of Lioness Season 3, initially Joe refuses to return to Neal and the girls because she believes that the people behind the kidnapping must be eliminated, or they would attack her family (via FilmiFeed). However, Neal and the children misunderstand her, thinking she chose the mission over her family. The season wraps up with Joe alone in her home.
