Lioness Season 3 is here with the return of CIA officer Joe McNamara as she deals with Russian operatives, foreign threats, and possible betrayal from inside the U.S. The story in this new chapter moves between the past and the present, showing a mission in Ukraine and the dangers it created for Joe and her family.
The most important detail about the present is that Joe has been kidnapped, and in the latest episode, 5 of Lioness Season 3, a lot about the past is revealed. Joe’s team sets up honeypot operations to catch foreign agents.
Two Cups pretends to be a defense contractor at a strip club to lure Belarusian operatives. Meanwhile, Cruz and Josephina investigate engineer Cade, who eventually leads them to a handler called Rooster.

Lioness Season 3 Episode 5 recap: The CIA's first operation exposes how the honeypot network traps its targets
Episode 5 of Lioness Season 3 focuses on the events that happened six months ago, when Joe wasn't abducted. It reveals the opening stage of the CIA’s secret Operation Treasure.
Joe and Kyle decide to send undercover officers to the club with the hope that they'll find the people behind the blackmail network. Two Cups takes on the identity of Richard, a married defense contractor salesman, while Tex and Randy use different professional covers.
As the episode moves forward, we see that Two Cups is taken to a woman’s home. There are hidden cameras inside, and they're already capturing him. This setup is part of a larger scheme in which women are used to lure powerful men into compromising situations.
The recording is used to force the men into helping foreign intelligence operations. However, Two Cups is already aware of what is happening, so he wastes no time in activating a hidden signal. This allows the CIA team to rush in and arrest the Belarusian operatives.
Lioness Season 3, episode 5 continues, and Joe’s team gets another lead through Cade McWeaver. He is a software engineer connected to a major defense contractor and had been blackmailed after accepting exam answers from a Chinese operative named Rooster.
Rooster threatened to expose Cade’s academic misconduct unless he supplied confidential company information. Joe then uses Cade for a meeting, and this gives the CIA a chance to capture Rooster and learn about the big operation.

Rooster's interrogation in episode 5 of Lioness Season 3 takes Joe toward Richard Ealy. This man is a Georgetown professor who is working with Chinese intelligence. And the reason behind this collaboration isn't financial gain but ideological.
It is revealed that Richard has become deeply distrustful of the American system and sympathizes with communist ideas. His method is quite troubling because he mainly targets students who plan to cheat.
Through Rooster, exam answers become the bait, and once students accept them, their secret can later be used against them. This connects with Errol’s earlier warning that China is taking a long-term approach to weakening America.
This explains that instead of just stealing information, this operation influences people from inside the country and gradually turns them against their own institutions. At the same time, Alex, the Belarusian operative, proves much harder to crack.
Kyle, Cody J, and Grady discover that most of what he tells them is information the NSA already knows. It suggests that he is deliberately feeding them useless material.
On the other side, Kyle is convinced that he is hiding something, so he sends Alex to Guantanamo Bay. During the interrogation, Alex is also told that Oleksandra is secretly working inside Russian intelligence, creating a possible danger if that information reaches the Russians.
Then comes Alex's Arabic prayer in episode 5 of Lioness Season 3, which makes the situation even more confusing. The CIA begins wondering whether his connections may extend beyond Russia.

Richard reveals a big threat and present-day twist
Episode 5 of Lioness Season 3 continues, and there is tension inside the situation room as Byron and FBI Director Wexler won't agree on each other's way of dealing with the captured operatives. Meanwhile, the CIA learns that several American politicians have secretly been compromised by Russian intelligence.
Oleksandra’s information includes seven members of the House and two senators, along with influential people outside government. Publicly arresting them could create panic and damage trust in American institutions.
So, Joe advises that they should confront each compromised official privately with evidence. They can be given a chance to retire within a day or face prosecution. Additionally, their cooperation could help the government identify handlers and uncover more of the network.
The CIA follows a similar strategy with Richard. Joe obtains a warrant through the Counterintelligence Department and has the Georgetown professor taken into custody. Richard then claims that he's just a man fighting for progressive ideals.
However, Joe points out the contradiction between his beliefs and his comfortable lifestyle. Episode 5 of Lioness Season 3 reveals the large salary Richard earns. He even owns a beach house and then sends his children to private school. He is involved in all of this and still claims sympathy for an ideology built around equality.
Later, Joe explains the idea of these ideological recruits to Neal. The episode then returns to the present, where Renat brings Joe to Texas after abandoning the Russian aircraft. Vehicles are waiting to move her again, and the location hints that the Russians may be planning to take her toward Mexico.
If this is possible, then Cody and his team might come to Joe's rescue. This is because they've already experienced a time crossing the Mexican border for an extraction.
