Netflix's highly anticipated Little House on the Prairie Season 1 is finally streaming. Based on Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House children's books, the latest family drama is a reboot of the classic Little House on the Prairie television series, inspired by Wilder's own childhood on the American frontier.

Little House on the Prairie Season 1 is based on the third book in Wilder’s Little House series. It follows the central Ingalls family as they leave Wisconsin to build a new life on the Kansas frontier, facing unforgiving landscapes, fever, wolves, and tensions with the Osage people.

In an interview with Netflix Tudum, showrunner and executive producer Rebecca Sonnenshine described the reboot as:

“I always like to say that this show is a love story about a family. They’re a family you want to be with, you want to know, you want to spend time with. That’s really at the core of what Little House on the Prairie is about: a family that is there for each other, tells stories to each other, tells stories about themselves.”

After months of hardship & struggles, the Ingalls were successful in building a home on the frontier. However, the Little House on the Prairie Season 1 finale arrived with a forced eviction that changed everything.

Here is the complete breakdown.

While Netflix's latest series spent the entire season establishing the Ingalls family's struggles of building a new home, the Little House on the Prairie Season 1 finale concluded on a heartbreaking note. Just as Pa, Ma, and their children were settling into their new lives, the final episode saw the arrival of federal officers with devastating news. The Ingalls were told that the Kansas land was 'free.' However, the federal officials revealed that the 'Little house' was built on land that legally belonged to the Osage community. This revelation was not only brutal but had lasting consequences on the Ingalls, as they were forced to abandon their house and begin a new adventure.

While Charles was ready to surrender for the greater good of his family, his neighbors were ready to challenge the authorities and fight to protect their houses. The Little House on the Prairie Season 1 finale gave Charles two options: he could either opt for violence to protect what he had built throughout the season or quietly surrender to protect his wife and daughters. However, rather than resorting to violence, Charles chose to face reality and quietly dismantled sections of the cabin. The act, despite being painful for the family, reiterated the series' main theme: that home is not just about the walls but the people living in it.

As promised, Netflix's Little House on the Prairie Season 1 expanded the world of the beloved books by featuring different viewpoints. While the Ingalls packed their belongings, forced to begin yet another difficult adventure, the Osage community celebrated their victory in getting back their ancestral land. However, this victory was marred by the suffering of another community. The Osage community did not celebrate their victory over another community, but the series built a silent understanding between Charles and the community, highlighting that everyone lost something in the end.

The Little House on the Prairie Season 1 ended with the Ingalls packing up their belongings and moving away from the Kansas frontier in their wagon. As Laura saw the prairie disappear, the series reminded the viewers that moving is the family's identity and that every bittersweet ending is also a new hopeful beginning.

Since Netflix has already renewed the series for another season, the finale concluded with Charles revealing the family's new destination: Plum Creek near Walnut Grove, Minnesota. The series concluded with the Ingalls' wagon heading into a vast landscape, hinting at the possibilities lying ahead. While the journey to this new beginning will be laden with obstacles, the Ingalls family's teamwork will help conquer them.

Additionally, the finale subtly set up a new hardship for the family. Mary began experiencing problems with her vision as the family moved away. While Mary's health concerns were barely touched upon in the final episode, they will certainly become a central obstacle for the family as they move to a new location in the second season.
