Marshals Season 2 Episode 4 takes Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) back to a painful chapter of his life, bringing a familiar piece of his Yellowstone past into the spotlight. The spin-off series follows a new chapter in Kayce's life as he navigates a new role with the Montana-based law-enforcement team, but he keeps revisiting his Yellowstone past in unexpected ways.

Episode 4, titled Blast Radius, serves as a reminder that leaving the Yellowstone ranch behind does not necessarily mean escaping the memories attached to it.

According to TV Line, the latest episode of Marshals Season 2 featured an important flashback to when a young Kayce Dutton (played by Berlin Enrique Nelson) forcefully received the Dutton branding (Y) on his chest from John Dutton, as punishment for his rebellion, which continues to haunt him in the spin-off series.

Marshals Season 2 Episode 4: Kayce revisits his harrowing Yellowstone past

Marshals Season 2 Episode 4 began with Kayce Dutton having a nightmare about a painful memory from his Yellowstone days. The flashback showed a young Kayce applying burn cream to his freshly branded Y, the Dutton mark branded on his chest by John Dutton. While new audiences might not know the significance of the Dutton brand, the Y is not just a physical scar but a painful memory, carried on by Kayce in the spin-off series.

Seasoned Yellowstone fans will remember that John Dutton branded his son as punishment after Kayce disobeyed him by refusing to make Monica get an abortion when she became pregnant with Tate. When a teenage Kayce announced Monica's pregnancy, John Dutton ordered him to terminate it, which led to his son's refusal.

Marshals Season 2 Episode 4 proves that the Dutton brand is more than just a physical scar for Kayce. The Y branding was more a power play to force Kayce's submission to the Dutton patriarch than a symbol of what it actually stands for.

What does the Y branding mean in the Yellowstone universe?

In the Yellowstone universe, the Y branding means a permanent, lifelong pact of loyalty, ownership and protection between a person and the Dutton family. As Rip Wheeler explained, many ranch hands were given the Y brand, signifying the ranch's commitment to the individual. While the Dutton brand usually stands for protection, family, brotherhood and community in the Yellowstone universe, it became a painful memory for Kayce.

The latest episode of Marshals Season 2 hinted that Kayce still carries the weight of his family's violent history in the form of the physical scar because it was forcefully inflicted by John, out of anger and in a bid to control his son. It's interesting that Kayce left the Yellowstone ranch and enlisted in the U.S. Navy after this incident, hinting that it had a deep impact on him.

Marshals Season 2 continues to revisit Kayce's harrowing Yellowstone history through such tense flashbacks. The latest flashback reveals that while the physical scars healed, Kayce still struggles to accept his family's violent history and wants to protect his son Tate from it. Season 2 is expanding on the complicated relationship between Kayce and Tate, as an extension of Kayce's own relationship with his father. While Kayce longs to not repeat his father's mistakes while raising his son, he ends up making important life decisions (like attending therapy) for him, suggesting that he is starting to control his son's life the way John Dutton controlled his.
