Therapy is unfamiliar territory for the Duttons, but Kayce (Luke Grimes) is ready to embrace a healthier path in Marshals Season 2.The latest episode of the Yellowstone spin-off, titled Falling Sky, saw Kayce make an unlikely parenting choice for his son Tate (Brecken Merrill) after he saw him in the middle of target practice. It turns out Tate's kidnapping has left a deep impact and he was practicing to defend himself with a weapon. While Tate saw it as a necessary measure to prepare for an uncertain future, Kayce saw it as a reflection of his problematic, violent Dutton history. At the end of Marshals Season 2 Episode 3, Kayce ordered Tate to get ready in the morning as he was taking him to see a therapist. While therapy seems like the best way to deal with Tate's trauma, he was not ready to see a 'shrink.'In an interview with TV Line, showrunner Spencer Hudnut discussed Kayce's fear of repeating his father, John Dutton's (Kevin Costner) strict parenting style. While John never encouraged his children to go to therapy, Kayce is setting a new example. But he is ironically repeating his father's mistakes by controlling his son. This is how Spencer described Kayce's decision for Tate in Marshals Season 2 Episode 3:"Kayce is trying to avoid giving Tate the John Dutton treatment as a father, but the irony is, when he tries to get him to go to therapy and Tate resists, that is a John Dutton moment where he is channeling his father. He even walks outside and sits on the porch, which is very John Dutton."Marshals Season 2 Episode 3: Is Kayce repeating his father's mistakes? View this post on Instagram Instagram PostSeasoned Yellowstone fans would agree that John Dutton exerted a toxic level of control over his children, particularly Kayce Dutton. John viewed his children primarily as extensions of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, valuing their loyalty to the legacy above their personal happiness. The Dutton patriarch used his oldest son's death, Kayce's deep sense of duty and financial pressure to orchestrate his return to the ranch. This set a harrowing trajectory for Grimes' character in Yellowstone and a fate he couldn't escape. After John Dutton and Monica's deaths, Kayce was determined to break away from this toxic pattern and keep Tate away from his family's violent history. This determination intensified when Tate was kidnapped by Tom Weaver, which made Kayce even more paranoid in Marshals Season 2. After his attempts to bond with Tate on a fishing trip were futile, he came up with an unlikely parenting choice: therapy. While Kayce's decision to take Tate to therapy in Marshals Season 2 is starkly different from John's parenting approach, he is repeating his father's mistakes by being extremely controlling of his son's life.Hudnut explained how Season 2 explores Kayce's emotional journey of not becoming his father. But every decision brings him closer to becoming more like John Dutton:"The more he tries to not be like his father, he's almost forced to become his father, which is anger masking fear, the control, and really trying to do right by your son. It's tough having two Duttons in a house together, especially when they have competing visions of what's best for one of them."Kayce's vision for Tate in Marshals Season 2 might be right. But it still highlights the Duttons' need to control their children. While Tate insisted he doesn't need to see a 'shrink,' Kayce was determined it was the right path, which will naturally create friction between the father-son duo.You can stream Episode 3 on Paramount+.For the latest scoops on your favorite TV shows and movies, follow SoapCentral.
