X-Men ‘97 Season 2 doesn't have a release date yet, but it will be released sometime this summer. For those who don't know, the X-Men ‘97 Season 1 finale ended with the X-Men being stranded across different time periods. The second season will resolve this unresolved plotline from the first season.

But we do know some details about the upcoming second season, thanks to the interviews given by the makers of the acclaimed animated Marvel series. One of the talked-about storylines from the first season will be returning in X-Men ‘97 Season 2. Marvel executive Brad Winderbaum himself confirmed the storyline's continuation in season 2.

Rogue and Magneto's relationship will return in X-Men ‘97 Season 2:

One of the shocking storylines in the first season was Rogue and Magneto's relationship. The fifth episode, "Remember It", revealed a flashback showing Magneto and a young Rogue in a romantic relationship. This revelation even disturbed fans, as Magneto was significantly older than her, prompting them to ask showrunner Beau DeMayo for clarification on Rogue's age in the flashback.

DeMayo clarified that Rogue was in her early 20s in the flashback, but it still had fans divided. However, by the end of the fifth episode, Rogue ends the relationship with Magneto and intends to return to Gambit. But Gambit is killed by the Master Mold at the end of the same episode, making reconciliation impossible. While Gambit could be back in X-Men ‘97 Season 2 as one of Apocalypse/En Sabah Nur's four horsemen, Magneto and Rogue's relationship could be back, too.

Brad Winderbaum himself confirmed the return of Magneto and Rogue's relationship in a Collider interview:

"Rogue and Magneto are stuck in the past together. They are kind of our past team… There’s a lot of romance to go around."

What do we know about season 2?

The second season will pick up right where the first season ended, with the X-Men trying to return to their original timeline. One of the things that Brad Winderbaum confirmed recently is that X-Men ‘97 Season 2 will have several teams from the X-Men comics. Disclosing the existence of multiple teams, Winderbaum said this in a 2024 Collider interview:

“There’s many teams, in Marvel, that have the letter “X” that are followed by a hyphen. I would put it to you like this… there’s two other X teams in Season 2.”

Moreover, Rogue actress Lenore Zann teased that the upcoming second season will include several storylines that writers of the original 90s series, i.e., X-Men: The Animated Series, wanted to explore in the sixth and later seasons, which they did not get a chance to do. She did so at the Big Lick Comic-Con:

“Eric and Julia, the writers, always like to say when they’re on panels that they were disappointed when the show ended after five seasons. Because it ends with a graduation, where Professor X is going off to another planet where they have technology that can hopefully save his life, but we never know what happens to the X-Men after that. And they were always like, ‘We had so many more ideas we wanted to do!’ but then it was the end of the season. So when we got the word that we were coming back, they were like ‘Great! Now we finally get a chance to do some of the stuff that we couldn’t do 25 years ago.' So that’s why you get to see a lot of really good stuff now, and you’ll continue to see some really good stuff in Season 2, and in Season 3. I love it. I love where it’s going.”

Make sure to catch X-Men ‘97 Season 2, scheduled to release sometime this summer.
