The clumsy titular android at the centre of Murderbot quickly became a fan-favourite sci-fi hero. The security unit, portrayed by Alexander Skarsgård, is self-conscious and prefers sitting in front of the television watching space soap operas, rather than dealing with human beings. The Apple TV series attracted viewers with its combination of action, dark humor, and emotional moments when it launched on Apple TV+ in 2025.

Murderbot follows a rebel SecUnit that illegally infiltrates its own control unit to gain freedom while undertaking dangerous missions. Following the Season 1 finale, which suggested a new direction, fans soon started craving for the next chapter. Adapted from Martha Wells's book series, The Murderbot Diaries, the series has already been renewed for Season 2, with more of the android's fun, deadpan humor. Although information on the second part is scarce, fans' expectations are already increasing.

When could Murderbot Season 2 release?

The question that fans are continuously asking is: when will Murderbot Season 2 be released? The official premiere date is yet to be announced, as of April 2026. According to entertainment outlets, filming is expected to start in the spring, so production is only getting underway. It is also likely to take time to finish, due to the numerous visual effects and intricate world-building involved in the show.

There is widespread speculation in the industry that the new season might land in the first half of next year. The renewal of the show was not surprising because the first season was an enormous critical success and had gained a massive loyal fan base. The plot about a socially anxious android struggling to find its role in the universe was unlike most of the common AI plots.

Season 1 had a cliffhanger ending: the rogue SecUnit, after assisting the PreservationAux team, decided to strike out on its own. This leaves Season 2 with the possibility of featuring new locations, bringing new characters, and delving into more complex themes like identity and agency.

What the next chapter could explore

Murderbot has become popular enough to attract the attention of some big names in the sci-fi and fantasy world. George R. R. Martin, the author of A Song of Ice and Fire, described the Apple TV+ adaptation as “fun” and stated that it does justice to the original stories. His endorsement has aided in building a strong reputation for the show among genre fans.

Season 1 revolved around the android finding its freedom, whereas Season 2 analyzes what it opts to do with it once it abandons its human companions to go across the galaxy on its own.

As the show is inspired by The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells, there is ample material that remains to be told. The next episodes may revive old characters or introduce new characters, but still follow the main theme of the show, which is a sarcastic bot trying to care about people but would still prefer avoiding them.
