NCIS: New York star LL Cool J hints at an emotional comeback for Sam Hanna

LL Cool J's Senior Special Agent Sam Hanna will return for another harrowing case in NCIS: New York, the upcoming spin-off of the long-running franchise, scheduled to air on CBS on October 6.

Cool J will reprise his beloved character from NCIS: Los Angeles and the latest series will follow him as he returns to his hometown of New York to lead a team of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. Seasoned NCIS fans will remember that Sam Hanna was revealed to be in Dubai for a high-stakes mission, which makes his return in NCIS: New York even more exciting.

In his latest interview with Deadline, LL Cool J teased an emotional comeback for Sam in the new series and said that a personal case will bring the Agent back to his hometown.

What is Sam Hanna's latest case in NCIS: New York?

Cool J teased details about his comeback in NCIS: New York in his latest interview. According to the spin-off's synopsis, Sam Hanna will return to his hometown for a special mission to investigate the death of his friend and Navy reservist Jack Halloway. When Sam asks permission from Assistant Special Agent-In-Charge Robyn Wells (Jennifer Beals) to handle the case, he will be teamed up with Scott Caan's Nick Schaeffer, a roguish NCIS agent, setting up a new partnership in the franchise.

LL Cool J teased that the NCIS: New York Pilot will fill in the details from Sam Hanna's time in Dubai. He called Sam a lone wolf, a samurai, who was handling high-stakes solo missions around the Globe, until he got a call in Dubai from somebody very important to him. However, he couldn't take that important call, which likely led to a grave tragedy. Check out LL Cool J's comments:

"He realizes missing that call might have put this person in jeopardy. So that brings him back to New York. It’s a very emotional reason. It’s a very close personal case to him. So he feels like he needs to go to New York and handle this one himself."

While the identity of the caller was not revealed, it was likely Sam's friend Jack, whose death will trigger his return in NCIS: New York. Naturally, investigating a former friend's death is no easy task, which is why the latest case will be challenging and deeply personal for Sam:

"He’s a man looking for redemption in many ways because of different things that he’s been through over the course of his career in law enforcement. It’s pretty special and a great contribution to the NCIS Universe in general."

Meet Sam Hanna's new team in NCIS: New York

Naturally, a new location calls for a new team. Sam Hanna will be paired with New York native Nick Schaeffer, who is starkly different from his new partner but carries the same motive to serve his city. Golden Globe Award-nominated Scott Caan is best known for playing Detective Danny "Danno" Williams in the CBS television series Hawaii Five-0.

Rounding out Sam Hanna's team in NCIS: New York are the tough and resourceful Special Agent Addison "Addy" Ross (Jacqueline Byers), the sharp and fearless Special Agent Wyatt Hill (Shane Harper) and the witty tech specialist Sean Sullivan (Devin Druid).

Since showrunner Byron Balasco and Cool J are open to crossovers, fans might see some familiar faces from NCIS: Los Angeles pop up in the spin-off, which would be a great treat.
