NCIS: Origins Season 2 Episode 14 unfolds with memory recollections of Gary's formative years. He was the newborn amongst the nine-puppy pack and had fragile legs. As a result, it was difficult for the puppy to take a walk. Therefore, he was taken to a municipal shelter.

That is when Gary turns the tide, as he stands on his feet and even pulls his box along. This moment in his childhood marks the first sign of his bravery and resilience. From then on, the pup started living in the open. That is when Mike Franks and Gary's worlds collide, as he finds the pupper on the streets. Oh, the name 'Gary Callahan' is kept by Mike Franks, due to the box that he carried.

However, Gary sets foot in Franks' life on a chaotic note. In typical canine fashion, the pup rips apart the cushions of Mike Franks' couch at home. Franks even finds himself losing his job as well. Nonetheless, Tish and Mike become aware of the fact that Gary is staying right here. Later, Gary was given to Artie, a network service handler, having ensured the dog was tended to.

After nine years, Gary has now started living with Franks. They are even closer now, as they doze off together in a shared bed. However, unfortunately, in this episode of NCIS: Origins Season 2, Gary gets attacked when he hunts down a person who is accused of killing a grocery store owner. At that crucial time, there were no veterinarians around. So Gary is immediately taken to Doc Tango. Strain emerges between Franks and his handler, Herm, who is of the opinion that Gary should not have been running free. Franks, however, reveres his K9 bestfriend as a heroic legend.

Thankfully, Gary's condition has stabilized post-surgery. But there is a downside to it, as the nerves of the pup's hind legs get badly impacted by the attack. Gary makes an entry to NIS in a pram, where Mary Jo prepares a warm bed for him, along with an abundance of treat supplies by Kowalski. Gary is still an integral part of the team. With his sharp olfactory sense, the pupper continues to uncover the truth in the intense criminal cases.

NCIS: Origins Season 2 Episode 14 also provides a mature, compassionate perspective towards Gary's attacker. The episode acknowledges the painful past of the person, as both Franks and Gary join together to help him.

This is Gary Callahan, a brave little pup who has been fighting since birth. Despite all odds, he emerges from the shadows and steals everyone's hearts. With his loyalty, valour, and unyielding spirit, he stands tall one last time to fetch his medal. He is indeed the best boy with a huge heart.
