The latest episode of NCIS Season 24, titled Sleeping Dogs, featured a shocking case that was connected to Nick Torres' (played by Wilmer Valderrama) days as a former undercover agent. The team followed a string of murders connected to Torres' ex-undercover identity, Dante Navarro, which led to a reunion with his former handler, Walt Keller (played by Mike O’Malley), and details about his seemingly mysterious past.

While Torres struggled to come to terms with his past, especially after Keller suggested Dante was still inside him, Parker encouraged him not to let Keller inside his head. After catching the mastermind, Torres returned to Keller's secluded cabin and enquired if the CIA side job was still up for grabs, suggesting a career change.

The final moments of NCIS Season 24 Episode 3 suggested Torres was likely open to returning to the world of undercover work, leaving fans wondering about Wilmer Valderrama's fate in the procedural. In an interview with Collider, the actor confirmed that Torres was not looking for a career change:

"It’s not quite jumping ship. I have to throw myself back in the deep end [to find out] what Torres comes out of the debris.”

Wilmer Valderrama teases Nick Torres' future in NCIS Season 24

NCIS Season 24 Episode 3 was peppered with details about Torres' past and a version of the character fans had never met before. The episode opened with a flashback to Torres' days as Dante, when he killed a man in cold blood after he was harassing the bar owner for money. This was part of Dante's mission, but it was hard to separate Torres' hitman undercover identity from the beloved NCIS agent.

Another shade of Torres' past came to light when Kasie listened to one of Torres' old wires while he was undercover as Dante. Kasie was naturally shaken and wondered how Torres felt so different while torturing a suspect for information on a case. While Torres was already struggling to deal with his dark past and his current identity as an NCIS agent, his former handler delivered a bombshell in NCIS Season 24 Episode 3:

"Nick Torres is the cover, and Dante Navarro is the real man underneath."

Torres was naturally shaken by Keller's words, which may have led to his game-changing decision in Episode 3. The actor confirmed that Torres' decision to return to his past is an effort to understand if he is still fit for undercover work rather than leaving NCIS altogether.

It looks like NCIS Season 24 will shift gears for Torres in upcoming episodes, which might extend Dante's storyline. Speaking with Collider, Wilmer Valderrama teased:

"The only thing I can tease you is that there are some crazy things about to happen with Torres this season."

If Torres returns to his undercover roots, NCIS Season 24 will likely feature more appearances from Keller, which will reveal further details about a never-before-seen version of Wilmer Valderrama's character.

NCIS Season 24 marks the return of Valderrama as Nick Torres, along with the main ensemble cast, namely Sean Murray as Timothy McGee, Brian Dietzen as Dr. Jimmy Palmer, Diona Reasonover as Kasie Hines, Katrina Law as Jessica Knight, Gary Cole as Alden Parker, and Michael Weatherly as Anthony DiNozzo.
