Jennifer Hudson has spoken out about her relationship with Common, calling it "divine" while emphasizing that marriage has never been something she felt compelled to seek.

On Tuesday, October 6, the 45-year-old singer and talk show presenter opened up about her connection with the rapper during an appearance on Today with Jenna & Sheinelle. Hudson and Common have been romantically involved since 2022; however, their relationship was not publicly disclosed until 2024.

How long have Jennifer Hudson and Common been together?

Jennifer Hudson and Common have been romantically linked since 2022, when they worked on the film Breathe, in which they played a married couple. Their professional relationship sparked dating speculation after the two were spotted together in Philadelphia and Chicago.

Hudson, on the other hand, originally shut down the rumors, explaining that the two had collaborated on a film and had naturally spent time together.

The dating speculation continued until 2023. Hudson and Common were pictured leaving Nobu in Malibu, and Hudson later paid the rapper a birthday tribute on social media. Common responded to her post, escalating speculation about their relationship.

By August 2023, Hudson had remained coy about the gossip, telling TMZ that "rumors say a lot of things" and describing Common as a "beautiful man."

The couple continued to make public appearances together, including at an MJ: The Musical performance in Chicago and various basketball games.

Common appeared on The Jennifer Hudson Show in January 2024, where he confirmed that he was dating someone. Although he did not expressly mention Hudson, the event was widely interpreted as proof of their relationship. Later, he stated that he wanted to be "loving and honest" about who he was and who they were as a couple.

Hudson subsequently described their relationship as "wonderful" during the 2024 Daytime Emmy Awards.

What did Jennifer Hudson say about her relationship with Common?

During her recent Today interview, Jennifer Hudson defined her relationship as "divine" and emphasized the connection and support she has with Common.

Hudson said that she likes having someone to whom she can relate on multiple levels, adding:

“It’s been divine, every bit of that.”

She also recounted inviting Common to play at Madison Square Garden, where he joined her for "Glory," one of Hudson's favorite songs:

“To have somebody who you can relate to on so many different levels and then to be able to have some support. I’m like, ‘Can you please come and do a song at Madison Square Garden?’ To come out and perform and to do one of my favorite songs, which is ‘Glory,’ he blessed us with that.”

Hudson finds Common to be a useful resource. She joked about having someone to call when she needs help with her talk show:

“It’s nice to have somebody else to call. ‘Do you mind hosting the show for me today?’ ‘Cause he can talk.”

Why isn't Jennifer Hudson in a rush to get married?

While Jennifer Hudson spoke fondly about her relationship with Common, she also stated that she has never seen marriage as a necessary next step. She explained:

“I’ve never been that girl that feels like, ‘Okay, I’ve gotta get married.’”

She went on to characterize the idea that women should automatically want marriage as a "stigma," noting that she has never felt that pressure:

“I think that’s a stigma that’s placed on women. Automatically, we just wanna be married. I’ve never been that girl. So no, I’m not that girl.”

Hudson has not entirely ruled out marriage in the future. She said:

“If that comes, it comes when you want it to or if you want it to."

Hudson was previously engaged to ex-WWE wrestler David Otunga. The couple started dating in 2007, got engaged in 2008, and welcomed their son, David Daniel Otunga Jr., in August 2009. They ended their relationship in 2017, after nearly a decade together.

Jennifer Hudson requested and secured a protective order against Otunga around the time of their breakup, with her counsel claiming that the action was taken "solely in the best interest of their son."

Otunga's attorney refuted charges of abuse or harassment, adding that he was looking forward to addressing the matter in court and obtaining residential custody of their son.

Common has also been candid about what he admires about Jennifer Hudson. In a recent interview with PEOPLE, the rapper praised her integrity, faith, compassion, and tenacity. He said:

“We talk about soul and heart. She embodies that to the highest level.”

He also complimented Hudson for continuing to spread joy while facing bad times in her life:

“She cares about people, she cares about God, she cares about her family. She is a woman that has light to her, and we all know she’s been through a lot of different difficulties. Some of the most difficult things that any human being could experience in life, and she still has a light to her. She still brings joy.”
