Courtney Kemp, the creator of Power, has responded to 50 Cent's most recent comments about their professional relationship, stating she is baffled by the rapper's continued references to her and asserting that she has moved on with her career. Kemp said:

“I am completely bewildered by his need to mention me.”

The exchange followed a previous interview in which 50 Cent, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, stated that he would never want to collaborate with Kemp again. The rapper, who worked as an executive producer on the STARZ crime drama, also said Kemp took too much personal credit for the show's success.

The beef erupted when 50 Cent made an unverified personal accusation about Kemp in an Instagram post. In response, the television producer defended her work on Power while acknowledging the rapper's part in bringing the show to life.

What did Courtney Kemp say about 50 Cent?

Kemp, in a response to Variety, questioned 50 Cent's description of their working relationship, notably his statements about the show's expenses and production requirements. Kemp said:

“While 50’s recollection of budgets and production requirements is uninformed, as he was rarely in a budget meeting, I have never once understated his importance in the genesis of Power.”

Kemp admitted that the rapper played a major part in the series' development, but stated that he did not write or create the show:

“While he did not write nor create the series, he was a large part of its birth.”

She then questioned why 50 Cent kept bringing her up in interviews and podcasts, suggesting that their professional disagreement had already been resolved. Kemp concluded:

“That said, I am completely bewildered by his need to mention me in interviews or podcasts. I have completely moved on in my career, and I hope that the imminent success of Street Fighter allows him to do the same.”

Why did 50 Cent criticize Power creator Courtney Kemp?

The controversy erupted after 50 Cent talked about his relationship with Kemp in an interview with Variety, which was published on October 17.

When asked whether there was someone in Hollywood he would not want to work with again, the rapper mentioned Kemp, with whom he worked together on Power when she launched the series in 2014.

The rapper said that their relationship worsened after the show's success, stating that Kemp began focusing on her own accomplishments while ignoring his involvement in getting the project done.

He additionally highlighted his contributions to the show's music, claiming that he wrote songs that represented the personalities of the show's main characters as well as the emotional tone of specific episodes. 50 Cent said:

“After the success of Power, she would go, ‘I wrote it.’ Well, you did write it, but I uploaded everything that you wrote, and we got a ‘no’ from everybody before we got a ‘yes,’ and I wrote songs that captured, at its nucleus, each one of the leads that we had and that emotionally captured energy for scenes.”

When asked if he thought Kemp had forgotten how much he contributed to the franchise, 50 Cent responded:

"I think she forgot."

The rapper also claimed that the network initially turned down his request to extend Power into a broader television universe. According to his assessment, a drop in membership numbers eventually forced STARZ to reconsider the plan:

“I pitched them the Power universe. They didn’t want the Power universe; I forced the Power universe on them when they saw the forty percent decrease. It opened the idea up to them of, ‘Oh, let’s put some more of it on so we can force the subscribers to stay.’ And it put me in a different position.”

50 Cent also criticized Kemp's alleged approach to franchise management, stating she attempted to exercise too much control over the network through a single show. He also stated that she had qualms about writing Power Book III: Raising Kanan because the ending had already been established.

The rapper contended that the series' late-1980s and early-1990s era provided significant storytelling possibilities, and that Sascha Penn eventually expanded the spin-off into a five-season series.

What did Cent allege about the franchise's creator?

The disagreement turned more personal on October 18, when 50 Cent responded on Instagram to Kemp's statement.

Referring to his previous Variety interview, the rapper stated that he first held back when expressing why he did not want to collaborate with Kemp again. He then made an unverified personal allegation about the Power creator involving members of the show’s cast and crew.

In the reports provided, 50 Cent did not present any evidence to back up his allegation. Kemp's reply to Variety centered on their working relationship and challenged his recall of the show's creation, but the reports provided do not include a separate response from her to his following allegation.

How did the rapper and Kemp work together on Power?

Kemp created Power, which premiered on STARZ in 2014, and served as showrunner. The crime drama centered on James "Ghost" St. Patrick, a New York nightclub owner who also worked as a drug kingpin.

The rapper worked as an executive producer and played Kanan Stark. His contributions included series-related music, such as the theme song, as well as franchise promotion.

The show's success generated several spin-offs, including Power Book II: Ghost, Power Book III: Raising Kanan, and Power Book IV: Force.

Although Kemp and 50 Cent were once closely affiliated with the franchise, their latest exchange reveals a growing disagreement regarding their separate contributions and their former working relationship.
